You're using different medias from different set of timelines, this is a projection.

Anyway, here's my long answer: It's the same thing with style. Whatever is "seemingly popular" will be shilled repetitively. Same thing with western animation, as calarts art style uses similar features. When you scrutinize into this web culture and realize the most "popular" anime, or has well values in the industry, you realize that the industry (just like media in general), just wants a cashflow. Sure, some may not be intentionally doing it, but it's what they're used to in specific time eras. There's quite some influence from these medias, and some of the studios make repetitive art styles that are depicted into these industries. For example, look at K-on and Tamako's Market. Same style, same studio. This is a problem with media in general, as media is heavily capitalized, as it's primarily quantity over quality in these industries. Hence why most media shows latch onto specific tropes or hypersexualization to gain traction. Just like how there's westernized comedic flicks that's meant to mind boggle you, or the same repetitive action movies with the same storylines and plot devices. Notice how there's more traction towards specific genres?

Akira is older than half the people on this site. And one of those is a comedy. Take any two anime from the same generation and similar genre, and they'll probably look very similar.

Obviously digging up Astro Boy and comparing it to something that came out yesterday will yield different results, or sitting Berserk next to a chibi anime.

It doesn't.
For one thing, those are all from the same studio (Kyoani) that has their own school. For another how does anyone mix up Dragon Maid and Violet Evergarden? They have a completely different look and tone.

For example, look at K-on and Tamako's Market. Same style, same studio.

Also same character designer, Yukiko Horiguchi.
Edit: She also did the character designs for Lucky Star, apparently.

From my experience on anime imageboards, there are many anime fans who, if an anime looks different from the now-standard moe style, will proclaim it "ugly" or "too Western".
