I don’t think landlords are inherently bad and there are a lot of hard-working landlords out there. But there are also a lot of them who are just parasites who leech off of their tenant’s work and wages without doing any labor or contributing to the economy themselves. This is usually the case with large landlord organizations rather than smaller ones or individuals who only lease a few properties.

There are also assholes who have to be outright told by the government “you’re not allowed to evict unemployed people during a pandemic” (see: the states who are imposing those laws right now).

There’s also the argument that landlords drive up the price of housing, making it much harder and more expensive for people to afford to actually own their own homes.

Unless they are not up keeping the apartments and property, how are they leeching off people?

Probably because modern socialists tend to come out of cities and counties that have absurd rental rates and because, in the past, there was a lot of competition for cheaper housing in say, Los Angeles or NYC that made it so scummy landlords could get away with being lazy or demanding and young socialists would have to tolerate it on order to stay in their precious little metropolis.
Add the factor that liberals in large cities live in echo chambers and the fact that as others have mentioned, socialism hates landlords due to conditions in the past and you get a bunch of young virtue signallers that hate a group of people for shaky reasons.

Because you could argue they’re not really doing anything; houses and apartments already exist and by purchasing them just to lease them out landlords act as an unnecessary middleman. Up keeping the property is work, but is it really full-time work? Homeowners do that on their own in addition to their actual jobs. And then there are landlords who take forever to do even that.

Again, I don’t think all landlords are evil and I understand renting is preferable to buying in some cases, but I do think the renting market has gotten out of control. The housing market in general is fucking busted, which sucks because people need housing/shelter the same way we need food and water.

Dear, you really don't know what you're talking about. It's expensive and time consuming if you aren't a slum lord. Just like with food and water, housing does not magically appear. A lot of landlords don't even do it full time, and those who do usually own a ton of apartments or do everything themselves. I have never been one myself, but I have had relatives who have been landlords, and they say it sucks.

Alright, fair point. I do know a lot of landlords bust their asses and are good to their tenants, which is why I said I don’t think the concept of a landlord is an inherently bad thing. But there are also a lot of landlords who drive up housing prices and while doing the bare minimum for their tenants.

The original reason is that in classical economical theory land is often used as an example of something that doesn't get improved if you invest in it (no, not seriously, but like a thought experiment). So therefore someone owning the land and taking money for usage of it would lead to marked inefficiency. Industry built on the land would have an extra cost to production that strictly wasn't necessarily needed, as the land is considered worthless on it's own. Also, considering that a lot of land was owned by very few people, often given to them for arbitrary reasons, this was somewhat true at times. The nobility and clergy had a lot of land and just didn't do shit with it.

That being said. Someone who rents out an apartment or house do not fit this bill, as the apartment deteriorates over time. To be able to compete you would have to invest in it. So they probably just hate the landlord because he takes their hard earned Patreon money.

A lot of modern socialism differs between houses and other property. Non-communist socialism (or just mixed economy if you find that to be an oxymoron) often try to charge different taxes for household and property meant for renting. As they want the workers to be able to afford their own houses, not rent.
Your model of differential rates of taxation relies on a model of State theft. from producers. That is an unacceptable imposition and qualifies you and the State for beheading more than it does the landlord.

What a bunch of tripe. Thet (or their forebears) HAD to have done something to amass the capital to buy the rental properties. They rightfully benefit from teh property they amassed through work and smarts.

It's pretty obvious:
* Modern socialists are mainly hipsters.
* Hipsters like to live in over crowded urban hell holes.
* Because of the high demand, the cost for an apartment in those areas is high.
* Hipsters are usually living on shitty dead-end jobs with low wage while constantly consuming shitty over priced products.
* Hipsters want to blame someone for having no money for avocado toast and the easiest targets are their land owners who they need to pay and are probably old and Trump supporters.

I can see both sides of it. There are almost-slumlords who will charge you $1000+/month for some worn out shit pit from the 1960's, complete with the original barely functional matching refrigerator/oven/dishwasher set. On the other hand, renters can destroy your property with absolute impunity. Rent would probably be cheaper, and apartments nicer, if apartment destroyers couldn't walk away from tens of thousands of dollars in damage. One shithead tenant can fuck up a house so badly that a small time landlord will be forced to sell it at a loss as a teardown, or take out a $30k loan to refurbish it, and then it will never be an affordable rental unit again. Somebody else will be paying off the shit tenant's debt for the next decade.

As someone who only has to take care of their own property, let's just say it sucks and the ride never ends.

I couldn't imagine being a landlord, especially in a progressive country where you can't deny apartments to single moms, crackheads and other dildos.
