This one's a bit tricky because in page 56 of vol. 20 of the manga (original run in 1991) it was said that he morbed down the wall to replenish his morbium levels exhausted by an anti-morb device developed by the Chinese Morbunist Party so that they could share the morb with the proletariat. However in the first animated series in 2001 it was stated that he morbed down the wall as a way to cope with the passing of his dog. I would assume the animation needed a somewhat simpler plot since the way it was formatted was almost like a villain of the week cartoon, but in my headcannon it was really both of these things despite the year in the manga being 1989, and in the animated series being 1988.
It's a pretty heavily debated topic in the morb fandom so keep in mind this is only my interpretation.
