There's definitely some psychological and evolutionary factors at play, but a lot of it is just edgy rebellion mixed with the appeal of danger from a safe distance. The same way people romanticize mobsters or serial killers in movies, some women project that onto real criminals, especially if they're attractive. It's not all women, obviously, but enough to be noticeable. Plus, the whole 'bad boy' thing usually falls apart when the guy is actually a threat to them and not just some abstract idea of dominance.

Just a half baked theory, but I assume some woman find dangerous men attractive because they perceive it to be a show of power and authority, while at the same time thinking that they'd be spared from that danger. Some cavewoman part of the brain that finds the big, strong, powerful man appealing and think those traits won't be turned on them if they're in a relationship with them but rather be used for their benefit outwards.
