I think it's more convenience than anything else. Furries seem a lot like anime kids I saw in high school who were sexually weird and open to anything. All of them would say they were bisexual but personally I think most of them were either gay or straight, but just really desperate.
They're just there and happen to be mostly dudes. As a gay man myself, most gay men are a lot more open to casual sex and there's a lot less fucking around (no pun intended) involved. It's much easier as an unattractive gay man to find sex than I would assume it is for unattractive straight men.
The gay community as a whole is totally degenerate, as are furries, so they dovetail together nicely.

Back in the 90s it was harder for people to be openly gay and so the furry community prided itself as being an "accepting safe space". You also had some individuals conflating the two and coming out to their family as a furry.

A couple reasons.
First, sci-fi in general and Trekkies in particular were never all about the fuckin'. Before anyone regales me with tales of con orgies, I know, it happens, but it's not their focus.
Second, Trekkies in specific had some early female involvement, they were ahead of their time on that point. Wider sci-fi also had a lot more manly men in the Heinlein mold back in the day so there wasn't quite the environment for gays to 'flourish'.
Third, they might have had figures equivalent to Mark Merlino, but they weren't central to the genesis of it like in furry cons.
