Why are Jay and Silent Bob such unfunny characters?
The only movie I really liked them in was Dogma. Jay and Silent Bob Strike back was fucking terrible. They were fine enough in the first Clerks movie but basically the same as all the other dumb teenage stoner stereotypes of the time. Clerks 2 and 3 were just kind of shitty movies in general.
It's supposed to be ironic. The only joke is that they are high all the time so their awkward behaviour is meant to be attributed to that. It has not aged well now that everybody imbibes. A lot of people can go under the radar, and just seem distracted, if they are experienced users. They have weed vapes now too.
Because Kevin smith's talent plummeted as fast as the popularity of jorts.
They where good as small supporting roles but turning them into weird mascots leads was just a fucking awful idea. Jay's just a generic retard stoner and silent bobs only joke of suddenly saying something self aware is constant diminishing returns.

Also, they filmed a lot in Pittsburgh. I love Sts Peter and Paul Cathedral, it's one of the most beautiful churches in a city full of beautiful churches, and was cooking at the Concourse when they filmed there. (Yeah, that's my brag. The only other ones I have are that I fed both Wes Craven and Ben Folds at a hotel I was working at about a decade(?) later.)
Multiple movies based on the deep characters of "wigger stoner who likes having sex and doing drugs" and "silent stoner who is smarter than he lets on (maybe)" aren't Shakespearean quality writing? Damn.
Because Kevin Smith writes dialog in the way 7th graders think grown ups talk. So it just comes out as pretentious, around 57% sensical, and with a jilted cadence as each character responds in the way they would think they should have responded 3 days later in the shower, except in real time.

I was right deep in my Diablo 2 addiction when I first saw it so I got right into it. It was actually my first one of their movies. I had no idea about Clerks or any of the rest of their stuff. I was kind of a little disappointed when I found out the rest of it wasn't about a war between heaven and hell.
kevin smith is such a strange character. he's like the poster child for neglected gen x'ers. he made clerks which is a phenomenally good indie movie, and then immediately got signed to a studio and then churned out a bunch of movies that just diminish quickly in quality until becoming dogshit retarded parodies of themselves. his dialog kind of has the joss whedon problem where it was fresh the first time you heard it but it's formulaic and now that you've been hearing it for 20 years it's dated as shit. most of his fans are people who haven't moved on from the insane clown posse phase in their lives and i don't think kevin smith has either to be perfectly honest with you

Some people only have one good idea in them. Honestly, that's better than most people who don't have any, but we shouldn't expect them to do better than that going forward.
