Budget PC gaming is what marks the platform apart from the rest, and 2021 killed it dead.

When we were naively previewing 2021, still in the warm afterglow of the impressive GeForce RTX 3080 and Radeon RX 6800 XT launches, this year looked like it was to be the year of affordable PC gaming hardware. A golden year for bargain rigs, and one in the eye for the latest consoles. As it turned out, 2021 was the worst year for PC gaming. Why? Because the heartsblood of the hobby, the mainstream and budget market, has been summarily executed.

PC gaming means different things to different people, and that alone plays into what is so good about the hobby, and why no other platform can match it. On the one hand you have the, admittedly sometimes elitist, early adopters with cash to burn; those who will drop a grand on a new component as soon as it's launched simply so they can lay claim to having the latest and greatest rig known to humankind.

And that's awesome. The sheer power growling away inside the highest performance gaming PC will always be unmatched by anything our console cousins could dream of. And the scalability of PC games means the big titles will look their absolute best on our rigs when pushed to their full potential.

But it's precisely that scalability that adds to what makes PC gaming truly special to me. Because on the other hand you have the budget builders, the dedicated gamers working hard to squeeze as much performance out of the most affordable parts on those exact same games.

When you've got a fat wallet it's easy to nail 4K gaming at silky smooth frame rates, but when you're working to a real tight budget you've got to put in the hours researching parts, compromising on some, and finally optimising the hell out of your games and your system. It's a challenge, but a hugely rewarding one, especially when you could often end up with a budget gaming PC that delivers frame rates to make an Xbox One blush.

That's how it's been in the past, and as a general rule I'd say going into the second year of a new console generation you could expect to put together a gaming PC for the same cash, with equal or better performance, compared with a current-gen gamebox. Prices go down, and new mainstream and budget parts get released to make that PC build job easier.

Not with this generation, not with the Series X or PS5. If you want 4K gaming at $500 that's still where the smart money goes.

Since demand started to ramp up for components and PCs in general, in 2020, that trend has continued into this year, and looks set to be the new normal throughout 2022—maybe into 2023 as well. Combined with finite manufacturing capacity, disruption to the supply chain, and the inexorable rise of cryptocurrency—again—, it has meant key components, such as graphics cards, are out of stock the instant they're released, and subsequently rare as donkey eggs.

That then becomes fertile ground for bots and ebay resellers slapping hugely inflated price tags on our favourite components, which has made it a nightmare trying to upgrade or build a new PC over the last couple of years.

That's all common knowledge, and you're likely living that pain as a PC gamer yourself right now. But a lesser mentioned side effect of the chip shortage, sky-high demand, and the brutally incessant pandemic, is the impact it's had on the choices manufacturers have made about what they produce, and what their product lines actually look like.

When everything you make sells out the instant you ship it, and you only have finite manufacturing capacity and chip supply, there is little incentive to create cheaper, traditionally high-volume products. If you sell as many $1,000 GPUs as your $400 options, why would you dip any lower down the potential performance stack?

Normally we'd have seen sub-$200 cards for budget gamers by now, those taking the latest architecture, with a few nips and tucks here and there, delivering impressive bang for buck. But the maths no longer adds up. The traditional understanding is that you make a lot of $200 GPUs, aiming to sell a whole load of them because you'll sell fewer higher priced options. But in this, the darkest possible timeline, there's no financial imperative to 'waste' production capacity on cheaper products when you could make the same number of more expensive chips and still sell the same number, but with a far higher return.

The fact it's economically understandable doesn't make it any less saddening or maddening. Capitalism, she is a harsh mistress.

And if you want some raw numbers to back that up: a year or so after the GeForce RTX 2080 launched Nvidia had released five sub-$300 GPUs, each a step up over their relevant forebears. You could even make that six if you counted the price drop to $299 for the RTX 2060 at the beginning of 2020.

On the AMD side, partly due to a lower flagship price, it had released seven of its own sub-$300 GPUs in the year after it released the Radeon RX 5700 XT, if you count the various OEM versions of its first-gen RDNA cards, that is.

And where does the number stand a year or so after the launch of the GeForce RTX 3080 and Radeon RX 6800 XT? At a big fat zero. Nada. Zilch. There are no sub-$300 GPUs in this generation.

And there's no alternative either. The crypto mining boom-bust-boom cycle has resulted in literally any GPU being picked up by enterprising ethereum diggers, and that means the budget gamer's last resort, ebay, is a barren wasteland when it comes to affordable last-gen graphics cards, too.

This makes it all but impossible to build a budget gaming rig worth a damn. Is there any hope on the horizon? Well, yes. Though let me just leave a quiet 'potentially' hanging in the air...

There may yet be new Nvidia and AMD GPUs launched in the coming year with lower price tags and actual availability, and Intel will finally be joining the race with its own range of discrete GPUs as well. That will give us three chances at affordable, competitive graphics cards, and with SSD prices going down, DDR4 being well-priced right now, and Intel's budget CPUs being outstanding value, there is very much the potential for a budget gaming renaissance in 2022.

With CES rolling around in January, traditionally where AMD likes to talk about mobile chips and new APUs, there are rumours of a Rembrandt APU design sporting RDNA 2 GPU cores. That could deliver low-cost setups which don't need a discrete graphics card to be able to deliver 1080p gaming performance, offering another affordable route into the hobby.

We've also got the Steam Deck in the pipe to release in February, with a console-level price point, and the potential for both handheld and docked PC gaming from a SteamOS-based system.

While these plans could salve our budget PC gaming woes, there is still the very real spectre of the supply shortage. The Steam Deck has already been delayed from a December launch to February, with Valve citing "global supply chain issues" as the reason. Initial stock has already been taken up, too, so if you haven't already bought a ticket to the Deck launch day funtimes you're not going to be bagging yourself the Steamy handheld anytime soon.

And whether we're talking GPU or APU, AMD is still utterly reliant on TSMC for its manufacturing (as is Valve thanks to using an AMD APU in the Deck itself) which means that it's fighting with almost every other company on the planet for chip fabrication capacity from the Taiwanese foundry. That means finite supply, which will mean figuring out how to manage those cheaper components alongside its higher-end GPUs and CPUs, as well as all the chips AMD needs to have made to supply both Sony and Microsoft for the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S consoles.

Despite its own broad manufacturing capabilities, Intel, too, is employing the contract manufacturing services of TSMC for its upcoming range of Xe-based Alchemist graphics cards.

That's a multi-manufacturer juggling act which could end up with the blue and red teams delivering theoretically fantastic budget graphics cards and APUs, but without the volume for any of it to matter.

Then there's Nvidia, which isn't beholden to TSMC, but to Samsung's manufacturing efforts. To now, that has anecdotally meant you're more likely to be able to track down a new GeForce GPU in the wild than an AMD one, and the same could ring true for the budget cards, too. Though supply will still be tight, and it will continue to be a battle to find one at MSRP throughout 2022.

So there is faint hope for a return of the budget gaming PC market with the potential for key components with reasonable price tags in the future. And that's vital because it's not just about the ultra-enthusiast world of monster rigs, PC gaming is inclusive. It's about giving everyone with a PC the chance to be involved in the hobby, whether they want to play Warzone or Wildermyth, whether they can afford to spend $1,000 on a graphics card every 12 months or they have to agonise over whether they can drop $50 on a new gaming headset.

I've certainly derived far more pleasure from carefully calculating and building a budget rig that punches above its weight class, than from slapping together a few high-powered parts and calling it a day. And I'm desperate for a return to the days when that will be possible again.
 
Neat use of the Amiga 1000 render. I agree with everyone in the thread. There's no point in going PCMR. That died in February of 2020. The SSI Gold Box AD&D games, old Microprose Sims, and even stuff as recent as the Fallout games, Skyrim, etc. all run just fine on my PC which is about 6 years old. i7 4790k, I just bumped up to 32gb RAM and I have a 6gb 1080. I don't stream or do e-Sports so a little chug every now and again means jack and shit to me.
 
This happens in every review/critic space. Automotive is probably even worse. Journalists get flown to resorts and given all kinds of shit. They get to drive around review car after review car to the point they don't even need to own their own vehicles.
Oh I assume it happens everywhere, which is why all journalists are scum until proven otherwise. It was just especially striking to me (as a small child!) that there was a dedicated section in their magazine that announced all the bribes they were getting, with pictures, every week. I just assume automotive journalists aren't that retardedly transparent.
 
Well, I've been looking at the Steam surveys, and... as of November 2021, the latest figures, the following 30xx series cards were in the top 20.

11. GeForce RTX 3060 Laptop 1.82%
12. GeForce RTX 3070 1.80%
17. GeForce RTX 3060 1.30%

nVidia's selling GPUs alright, but among Windows users, they're starting with 16 or 20.

(On Linux, no 30xx series breaks 1% use.)
 
I just like making mid-range rigs for a good price that I can pay off via pirated games. Most new games are total microtransaction-battlepass-craftingsurvial ridden shit anyway.

Drop 1k on a rig, pay it off with 2k of pirated games. Smort.
 
I was rocking a dusty old 770 until my rig ate a lightening strike surge and I had to rebuild. I was going to buy a new card for Cyber Punk 2077 but since the whole rig got knocked out I wound up just getting a 2080 as quick as a could. Good thing too because card prices got insane. Control and Wolfenstein feminist edition came with it, the later I didn't even both to redeem. Control had good gameplay and amazing environments/fx and looked great with ray tracing but the player character made me wish I could turn the gun on myself.
 
I still rock my old rig from 2017. 6700K, 16 gigs, etc. I was wanting to upgrade my old radeon to the 1080 when they dropped, and then the first crypto rush tanked the market for gaming. I had to wait for that shit to subside to actually grab one for anything close to the then MSRP of around $600. Given the retarded cycle of crypto as it stands now, and the fact that the card still performs just fine for everything that I tend to play with any regularity, (and it's also worth a grand again :roll: ) I'm just gonna stick with it, since I don't really need a 20 or 30 series card. Raytracing would be nice, sure, but I don't really play AA A titles anywhere near their launch dates, since they are always released half baked and halfass, and that's not even getting into all the many gripes I and others usually have about the content. We all know that gaymers can be a caustic, cynical, and needy bunch, so take the bitching with a few bags of salt, but on that score, they are usually correct in my experience. I guess I'll also echo others here and say that the majority simply just aren't any fun, or they are great fun for around 2 hours for non multiplayer focused games, and then it slopes off rapidly for any number of reasons.

The article raises a lot of good points, but it's main issue from where I sit is that even while they bemoan the supposed death of mid tier gfx cards, they do it while surrounded by the latest bleeding edge tech, making the whole thing rather tone deaf. Not that they can really do anything about most of the issues, but it still just smacks of "oh, I'm so sorry for all you plebs while I game in 8k on an 80 inch tv in our breakroom. I so feel your pain, because in my spare time I like to build budget machines too"! This is why people hate jounofags like you, fuckface.

I'll also 100% agree with many here in the observation that you really don't even need a powerful gfx card to have hours of fun playing games on a PC. Gaming on PC's really started back in the 80's, so you basically have all of that up to today (or whenever you just felt like the music died or something) to play through, and many fun games from the 2000/(edit: early) 2010's will run great on what's now considered a toaster of a card.

The greatest thing about the PC is now and always been it's flexibility as a gaming platform. That won't cease to exist simply because the mid-tier market of new gfx cards has temporarily evaporated, like this "author" is leaking crocodile tears about.

And if you don't feel like PC gaming is for you, well, there's always consoles. Your PS5 or Xbawks 1 awaits, if you can find one. Or just buy an older one, the PS3 has a huge library of great games, and they are all cheap as fuck.
 
Maybe the industry will have to innovate game play as a selling point over GFX.
As much as I loved the turn based dungeon crawl boom of 2010-ish I really wished they would have done something more creative than "Eye of the Beholder but modern graphics". Innovation is a financial risk for the big boys and indie games often big it down in insufferably twee hipster shit.

I build a new high-end rig every 2-3 years. I’m working on a new Z690 build right now. It’s more of a hobby than necessity, and the shortage of DDR5 RAM in particular allows me to plan the build out in greater detail.

The greatest thing about this pandemic is the sudden uptick in prebuilt PC sales, and further exposure to how shitty they are. When I finish a build, I generally try to find a use for it (MAME machine, some type of server, etc.), and if I cannot repurpose it, I sell it off. Sometimes I’ll come back with a few hundred extra dollars, and other times I’ll lose. I bought a 2080ti before MSRP completely inflated last year, and I could part it out for nearly 1.5x its cost alone. I cannot wait to see how much I’m able to sell this computer off for.

Also, if you’re intending on building a new rig, be patient. Do not purchase from scalpers. I’ve “won” every part in my Z690 build from Newegg Shuffle - sign up daily. The issue is that they sell their components in combos, and you generally don’t want or need the item that’s attached to it. I’ve been able to return unwanted bundled items to the local Best Buy for store credit. Not ideal, but it’s better than sitting on motherboards that will never be used.
 
I've won 3 3060 Tis and a 3080 ti (which I kept for myself to use) off the newegg shuffle over these past couple months and sold the 3060s to my friends who weren't as lucky at a modest loss.

I bought an skylake-x i9 from 2017 this year and it's still high end, just not cutting edge. Like there are plenty of benchmarks to illustrate certain performance weak spots, especially trying to process 140+ frames per second out of a high end gpu, but otherwise the only people with more powerful cpus are people with balls to the wall overclocks on water cooling or Intel's newest line of processors. Most people are happy with an 8 core skylake cpu or amd's carefully calculated skylake competitor

Intel might have fucked up for four years straight but both they and and have JACK SHIT lined up on the horizon for next gen processors, besides improving scalability with cache and eeking out incrimental improvements with frequency boosts

Dude it amazes me that people still use speccy, it literally does not recognize anything newer than about 2013. It just displays "unknown." And the temps are usually the wrong sensor, if they even show up at all.

I'm using a Coffee Lake i5. Only time it's ever not enough CPU for the game I'm playing is if it's Planet Zoo. I have to lower the resolution to 720p for that and still get issues once I have more than a few small exhibits. Good way to get the frames dropping fast is letting peacocks inbreed to hell and back. Upgraded from a 970 to a 2070 Super in 2020 and it'll probably last me for years.
 
I aim for mid-high. Usually get a few extra years out of it while not falling too deep into the pit of diminishing returns that you get with top end components.
Ditto. "Bleeding edge tech" is a goalpost that's always moving away from you, forever.

Going top-of-the-line mainstream means I get pretty good value and longevity without chasing the tech rabbit. Points to AMD for sticking with AM4 and making Zen+/Zen 2/Zen 3 compatible enough to create a viable upgrade path for reasonable money.

As for GPUs, the scalping/botting bullshit won't end until 1)Nvidia/AMD floods the market with decent $200ish GPUs for normies on a budget who still want to game gud and 2)game developers de-emphasize graphics in favor of other gaming qualities. Not much use for a 3090 if the latest games only need a 1660 Super to run them with maxed out graphics.

Speaking of which, the $200ish GPU market is absolutely fucking dead. Even a goddamned 1050 Ti is going for double its MSRP. Below that, it's a wasteland of low-profile passive-cooled cards that can barely drive a monitor image, let alone do any sort of actual gaming more intensive than Solitare.
 
im lucky i managed to pull a 1060 6gb under 200 dollars at all. i could sell that thing for triple what i got it for to grab myself a 3000 series gpu if i wanted, but tbh i dont think i'd get much benefit outside of being able to access gay tracing
