I can't really relate to the whole religious thing because it was just never there for me, but I think this part is the worst factor in this. Accepting that role models and figures are human like the rest of us requires accepting that the awful shit they do is also part of the human condition, and I think a lot of people cannot bear that idea. It also crosses religious lines too. If we're created in God's image, why would God create such horrors? So really no matter what cosmic nightmare you subscribe to its still a fucking nightmare.

I might be a strange person but knowing it's part of the human condition doesn't really frighten me. It just means we can all do really fucked up things, and we can all do really great things if we put ourselves to it. It doesn't mean we are conditioned to do one over the other, to me it just means that we should be more careful into what we put our effort into.

I thought most religious people just handwave the issue of God making bad people by just going "It's part of God's plan" or "They were influenced by The Devil" so honestly religious people have a step above others when it comes to that.

I do ascribe to the idea that religion is humanity's attempt to explain the things they saw around them so that part still rings true for me.
