Well, modern day Iranians speak Persian, whereas modern day Iraqis speak Arabic. Languages as different as, say, English and Hebrew.

Interestingly enough this was a cause of much of their animosity since the Ba'athist leadership (Saddam and all his henchmen) that ran the country for decades was all Sunni, so the Shia were treated like shit. But I actually didn't realize there were that many, I always assumed they were maybe a third of the population. So they weren't even a minority being treated like shit, they were the majority.
