What should I use my Dutch oven for?

I guess it's just preference if you're comfortable with electronic cooking - it used to be that dutch ovens were more flexible because you could do stuff like sear meat before you slow cooked it, but now I guess they allow you to do pretty much the same thing.

I guess you can use it to make batches of soup, which you can then let cool and place the whole pot in the fridge without needing another container. Root vegetable soups are particularly good for this.

I asked for one for Christmas and now I kind of regret it because I didn't have any specific use for it and just expected something to manifest itself.
Bake bread. Super crusty bread.

Make a cheesecake.

The obvious, make a roast or a stew, either in the oven or on the stovetop.
I was going to shitpost "dutch children" but somebody beat me to making a shitty post.

I've seen people take them camping and just throw them on/next to the campfire. Might be useful once the apocalypse starts and all the power goes out, otherwise it's just a less fancy slow cooker.
And make a Dutch baby.

Here's one I made:

In general, anything you can make in a slow cooker, you can make in a Dutch oven either on the stove or in the oven itself, where you can use it with or without a cover for all or part of the cook time. It doesn't blast things as much as a pressure cooker and seems to take somewhere in between how long it takes for a pressure cooker and a slow cooker, but gives you a lot of the same quality as a slow cooker.

In my experience, they're the best for cooking tougher (cheaper) cuts of meat. I've used slow cookers and pressure cookers a few times, but I can never seem to get the same quality of something cooked in a dutch oven. I'm probably just retarded and could try harder, but I grew up with dutch ovens so that's what I'm used to, personally.

Once you've got it filled and ready to go, put a layer of tin foil over the pot itself before you put the lid on - Keeps the lid clean so less scrubbing later.

I cook a lot of stews, chilis, and lentil dishes in mine. All are self explanatory. I also like to make shepherd's pies out of leftover meat and veggies. Add some mashed potatoes, caramelized onions, and pasta sauce or tomato paste and toss that bad boy in the oven for a half hour. I don't own a casserole pan so more often than not, it serves double duty filling in. I also treat it as a deep skillet. Over thanksgiving, I ran out of pie dishes and made some mile high apple pie in it.

This thread makes me sad. My retarded ass is likely moving back to the EU at the end of the year and cast iron is mostly a complete foriegn concept to them. I have to Amazon all the Lodge I need over. 🥺

When I was young, my mother would use the Dutch oven to make pork broth.
It was usually pork neck bone with Chinese radish.
She would often make the broth into a meal by adding mushrooms or wood ear fungi (木耳), potatoes chunks (they preform the same role as potato starch), and noodles topped off with chopped green onion.

Le Creuset is a very famous old brand of porcelain-coated cast iron made in France. But it would be less expensive to have Lodge shipped over.

I bought my brother a Lodge one for Christmas a few years ago. Seemed like a quality product. Mine is a Le Creuset but I couldn't tell much of a difference. Williams Sonoma has them for half off during the Holidays. I'd never pay full price for those things otherwise.
In the based cookware thread, someone brought up that certain restaurant suppliers have enameled cast iron cookware for cheap if you know someone who has an in. Dunno how true it really is but it might be worth looking into.
