What old internet trends do you miss?

Finding a page you liked on Angelfire or GeoCities and wandering through the links at the bottom to find more related pages and things the person who made it recommended. The self-organized networks of fanclubs and niche hobbies were so much more fun to explore than popping things into a search engine and getting back a bunch of subreddits and sites made by that thing's social media rep.

HTML being the low barrier to entry to shitting out your thoughts and preferences for all to enjoy was the thing keeping us safe all along.
 
One thing I like was the lawlessness. Their were limits of course but man did you not really know what was going to happen next. Their are countless examples, but nowadays you can kind of get an idea of what happens given how often it happens but back then their were no algo's or anything to generate your own content stream. There are benefits to it sure but it feels like it curated things in a way that never feels organic.
 
Nothing was really that serious. What we thought was serious business is peanuts now.

Even a Chris-chan situation would have been manageable by anybody -To begin with, a normal person would have stopped adding to the fire way before getting a ED Entry-

Also, stuff was not stored and used as career/friendship/relationship destroyers in the future. People did all sorts of embarrassing shit on the internet with no consequences, as it really ought to be (Yes, I know where I'm writing this)

It helped that cameras were undigital and cells didn't have cameras, so you could do a whole lotta shit irl without risking being shamed on the internet.

This is more about the bitch ass mindset of people. Their is always some good in a bad situate and I say that alot about the whole "cancellation" era of hollywood. People like Harvey Weinstein and R.Kelly getting punished for absolutely shit behavior is a good thing, but this quickly funneled into people being a bitch about something they just dont like. That's always been a case but multiplied by the internet. The internet is only a tool not an malevolent being.
 
I miss the creativity behind dumb shit.

badger,badger,bagder,badger,badger mushroom, mushroom, wasn't that funny, but the weird, dumb creativity behind it was ace.
Patrick Moore plays the xylophone, jamie and his magic todger, thor and odin buying a kebab, joe hamster and squeaky squirrel animations (name evades me) were just amazing.

Myspace pages were visual autism but i admired the madness behind it.

I miss when dating apps weren't apps, but webpages and web sites and even though it was just a hook-up for pure sex, the people on there were much more real and down to earth than any modern day dating app, which are still about sex, but in a normie way of "let's go for dinner and meet my kids first".

This sums everything up. The internet was wild, op was always a faggot, you couldnt believe anything you read on the internet and playboybigdick691337sniper wasn't really an astronaut but his larp was perfect.

On the flip side, the serious stuff was serious. There we some 'top secret' info leaks back in the day that, at the time, could be real or fake, and they all turned out to be real. It was a hell of a time.

I remember MySpace actually being a lot of fun when I could completely change the layout and insert my own music player with my own mp3s. If only I had known where the social media concept would lead...

Bittorrent when it was in its infancy. Suprnova...so early on and yet you could find fucking everything on there.

Like others have mentioned, just that Wild West feeling. It was overall inhabited by autists and artists. Once it hit the radar of corposcum it was the beginning of the end. Now the clear net is primarily corposcum and the dark net, while a fun idea, seems to be mostly criminals and perverts. (The bad kind lol)
 
The sense of adventure. You used to be able to just come across some weird bullshit and see something you've never seen before. Bizarre little websites holding little worlds all of their own, strange videos, crazy people, and genuine passion projects. Now days is all the same big websites and that's it.

I remember when Facebook launched and I thought: Who the hell is gonna use their real name on the internet?

Today it has become completely normalised to tie your online activity to your real life legal identity. For literally no gain. I am as dumbfounded by it today as I was back then.

So to answer the topic question: I too miss when anonymity was the norm.

I also miss the time when it was standard to just pop up and view a fucking website, when mandatory log in or "open in app" annoyware was unheard of. When you could just create a damn account without tying it to a bunch of details. At the most you'd need an email which you could also make an account of in a minute.

On that topic I miss the numerous free email providers where you could just make a junk/funny mail address in 3 minutes without having to give your phone number or personal information or recovery email.

In general everything online is such a fucking chore now.

I Remember that time period too when you would sign up on XYZ email provider or even yahoo cause they didnt even track cookies and now you need social security,phone number, photo id, ballsack shot its rediculous.
 
I miss Myspace . I remember when I "designed" my page for the first time, with wild colors, fonts, and it would play music when you opened it. It was autism on steroids but I was so proud of it and I thought with a page like that I was the coolest shit on the planet.

I hate fucking Internet today. Everything you open is one million popups: cookies/use app/sign in /sign up.

Dont even get me started about ads. If you dont have ad blockers/use Brave etc everything is one big ad nowadays.

Even Google images is fucked, if you google lets say a shoe, and go to images every other image is "sponsored".

Talking about that, I'm wondering if people became desensitized to adds over the decades.

I Remember the last few days of old forum posts about DO NOT GOOGLE IMAGE XXXX and you would get what they saw cause they didnt generate results per person. IDK when that changed but it was awesome. I think im feeling lucky for blue waffle still works but...whoopty doo.
 
I miss the days where half the internet wasn't constantly horny-posting. I know, I know, "the internet has always been for porn hurr hurr". And while yes, it is true that porn has always been a decent portion of internet traffic, until the 2010s rolled around people generally understood it was at least a bit gauche to discuss your porn habits in non-porn areas. You would go off, watch your porn, spank off, and go back to what you were doing. Now you spank off then run back to your friends with your spunk-encrusted drawers in hand ready to share with them the furry vore porn you just spanked off to. I find the nofap antiporn people to be generally irritating, but they're a pretty natural reaction to everything being constantly horny.
 
I miss the pre-monetization Internet. When people posted stuff because they wanted to and not to grift or shill.
I also miss the more laxed copyright policies, where a person could put music or show """copyrighted""" material with no worries.
 
I miss free speech.

There were major forums where what we discuss on KF was normal or even tame then. Sensitive people clutched their pearls and went back to their megachurch, the rest of us rolled with it and had fun.

Unfortunately the pearl clutchers were teachers and taught everyone to be super sensitive about "microaggressions" so RIP free speech.
