Lighter pigmentation is an evolutionary adaptation to areas with less direct sunlight, i.e. Northern Europe. Darker pigmentation is an evolutionary adaptation to areas with more direct sunlight, i.e. Afro-Asia.

Skin pigmentation/melanin has to do with vitamin d synthesis and sunburn. Eye color has to do with snowblindness. Nose size has to do with temperature and humidity. This is why black and hispanic Americans mostly stay in the south and germanic Americans mostly stay in the north, those are the climates they've evolved to thrive in.
