Nauru was actually rich for a long time because it was a source of phosphate. But the phosphate ran out, and the industry collapsed. Nauru became poor and now relies on imported goods from Australia. It also has the highest obesity rate in the world.

- It doesn't produce particularly rare or valuable resource like emeralds, diamonds, rare earths, silk, etc unlike many African nations.
- It isn't militarily powerful nor is it a member of a relevant military alliance unlike the Baltic states and NATO.
- It doesn't have an important role in history unlike the Mongols nor does it boast a known monarch or ruler unlike the Vatican City or Brunei.
