what is molle actually for

I just buy stuff with molle on it because it looks cool but what is it actually for?

I have several molle tactical kilts and I attach my tactical gear to them so that people know I'm a serious tactical guy while I'm wearing my tactical gear. Usually I have pouches holding snacks or other important tactical gear attachments like extra nerf darts.
