I think Barb too had a level of getting extremely angry with Chris, putting him down, insulting him, then turning around and saying how much she loved him and how much he was this special person who was so smart, after he fucked something up. She just has that bitch persona about her.

I think that's why he could stand Kacey telling him what a fat, worthless fuck he was, and he's all just nonplussed by it, because that was extremely similar to how Barb treated him. I wonder if Flutter is like that behind the scenes...

I think this is a pretty keen observation and leads me to another point about Chris. Every interaction we see Chris have is, in his perspective, transactional in some way where the end goal is him trying to get what he wants. Because he never really puts in effort to get what he wants, he's always going with what seems to be the easiest route to get friends, money, china, etc without any notion as to whether his actions will actually lead to that. He wants his way "now!now!now!now!now!" and anything that pushes back on what he wants is ignored, berated, or just met with his whiny sighs.
