My cousin had a heavy influence on me, he showed me a lot of anime. The one that really got me into it I think was full metal alchemist.

While I watched the Pokemon and original Sailor Moon anime as well as Kiki's Delivery Service when I was really young, I didn't really consciously recognize them as anime specifically. When I was a bit older, Bleach and Naruto bored me so much that they turned me away from anime in its entirety with the exception of Bo-bobo. Still later, I stumbled upon Cowboy Bebop and Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood on Toonami one night when I was bored, and I've been hooked ever since.

(I know this is old as hell but..) I originally watched an old style anime called "Tokyo mew mew" that got me into anime. Its pretty good but really girly. I've seen Sgt frog too. Its pretty good anime as well and would recommend it for the comedy.

Grew up watching Speed Racer and G-Force on Cartoon Network. Didn't know what anime was then, just really liked the idea of a cartoon that had an ongoing story and wasn't episodic.

I watched movies like Vampire Hunter D and Akira once I knew the difference between Western animation and "Japanimation" as we old farts used to call it.

I'm not hugely into anime, but I enjoy some shows that I think Adult Swim helped really cement my interest, like Wolf's Rain, Trigun, .hack/sign and good old Cowboy Bebop.

I grew up watching Speed Racer, too, as well as Space Battleship Yamato (as Star Blazers), so I was really amused to hear Ty Beard say something similar. Also Kimba, the White Lion. I never really got into anime as an adult, though.

Kids' WB airing Pokémon, Cardcaptors and Yu-Gi-Oh with Fox Kids airing Digimon was what did it.

One of my little brothers has been getting more interested in anime due to over-exposure, and I think it's because he watched Catnapped a lot growing up. I've noticed a lot of shows he finds and pays most attention to are similar in style and humor complete with cute mascot animals, bonus points if they have similarities to Don Bluth movies. I find it amusing.

Little Witch Academia, particularly. Before then, the only anime I had watched semi-consistently were Pokemon and Kirby: Right Back at Ya.

I started with Pokémon, since I was big into the game, and the original Dragon Ball which was recommended to me by a good friend of mine. What really kickstarted me going into the massive rabbit holes of animu and mango was when said friend back in 2000 tricked me into watching Yu-Gi-Oh!, promising me it's a hentai. Being the dumb pre-pubescent 5th grader I was, I believed him and thought the show was already having a good start when the first thing I saw was Mai Valentine. I suppose you can imagine my ensuing disappointment...

Nevertheless, I continued to watch Dragon Ball Z, Case Closed, Ranma 1/2 and Digimon, however once I was introduced to Silent Möbius, One Piece, Noir, Vision of Escaflowne, Ghost in the Shell, Agent Aika and the endless possibilities of the internet, I officially crossed the autism event horizon.

There was nothing else to watch. Seriously, I lived my childhood in a period when anime were 'trendy', and networks in my country imported hundreds of series in the span of less than 10 years. That contributed a lot to my autism.

I started like 15 years ago, starting with Naruto, but only watched that show,so 2 years ago i got more interesting in Animus browsing imageboards and cool maymays so i became a full weeb in short way i become a real NEET & Hikkikomori expending a lot of hours eating fast-food shit and watching season anime.
Stopped at 150 shows and never looked back in my anime list.

Circa 1994...

"Dude, there's these cartoons from Japan, right? And they've got BLOOD and GORE and NUDITY in them."

"What...? And these are cartoons?"

"Yeah, they're cartoons! With BLOOD and GORE and NUDITY."

"Cartoons with blood and gore and nudity?"

"Cartoons with blood and gore and nudity! It's called 'Japanimation!' Dude, I've got this one, this one, right here. Called Ninja Scroll."

"Whoa. And the kids over there watch this stuff?"

"Yeah, it's like their Saturday morning cartoons!"

"They must have like the coolest parents ever."

Hook-Ups t-shirts & skateboards back during my 1990's days.
"Who are these gun-toting sex symbols? Nobody draws cartoons like that."
