I don't care if goodwill is unethical and they make profit from donations -
Even with their pricing change, I still go in and get work/yardwork tshirts for 5$ a piece. I go in, grab like 50 of good quality cotton tshirts and hunt around for a few unique things from the 90s and it's worth it. It's still the best place to get affordable clothes that are made well, since they're older that you don't care aren't instagram ready.

i recommend the following if you want clothes of better quality/standards... and i also recommend it to give this shitty industry the finger it deserves
I really appreciate you taking time to write that very informative post, but man- I wish we were all able to go to any random store and buy normal fitting clothes, made with normal fibers, and at a normal price. I wish finding normal clothes wasn't this hard

the current "trend" (or general attitude now, i guess,) i hate is stores that call themselves high quality / chic / in-style (chicos, macy's, dillards, etc) selling absolute bullshit. i can walk inside and check a shirt and it'll have the most nonsensical seam allowances with stitches and loose threads you can shove two full fingers through. the fabric is always, always, thin. i would expect sneezing in one of the shirts would cause it to rip, even in petite size, seeing as thats all they sell anymore. i am begging god at this point to bring quality back to the fashion stores. all our clothes in 10+ years will just be handmedowns, probably, since they're the only things that don't fray in 2 seconds.

+ doubly dislike seeing people in the city never cut the vent stitches on their coats. come on.

i've been trying to buy myself cute clothes now that i've undergone a lot of physical and stylistic changes, but unfortunately, finding "cute" clothes is a unique circle of hell that is perhaps located next to the antichrist's frozen lake in the inferno.

my current roundtable of interest:
- Depop, and other resell sites. I love vintage shirts, both for the fact they're not made of tissue paper, and for the fact they're usually in good style and seem chic. I have not downloaded the apps yet at the screaming behest of irl gorls warning me that it is a uniquely terrible experience, but I am to the point where I would just delve in. Does anyone have experience with depop / resell websites?
- Shein, and various overseas cheap-o websites that seemingly have good and cute stuff. Pinterest, when ran without adblock, will furiously shove any and all images it has of cute tops and fashionable purses in my face... all from shein... i've heard that it is cheap, and the clothes will typically be either a scam or stupidly low quality. Please advise.
- IRL shopping. I would rather put a bullet in my head. Malls in my area have bland baggy clothes or clothes with stupid printed bullshit on the front and back (and despite checking 'cute girl' stores like hot topic and forever 21 since they rarely have decent sweaters with camisoles, their selection is usually dogshit.) Goodwills and similar dono sites exist in my area but I am afraid I'd get ringworm or some shit just from touching a pair of lowrise jeans.

please advise on anything that I could do to make a wardrobe that doesn't have me looking like an autistic faggot

if its any consolation, its not a YOU thing; fashion is led by corporations run by greedy dickheads that absolutely do not give a shit about its consumer, doesnt fucking care about the designers, the people in the supply chain, or anybody involved that could have a say about what the industry should be doing for cost/sustainability practices...but i digress. shopping is made hard both on purpose and out of sheer short-sightedness. as long as the glorious shareholders get their money, everyone else down the line can get fucked.

I don’t know but I’d like it to go away. It found its way into our choreo and now I have to do that ridiculous shit on stage.

To avoid double posting: the purse raincoats look silly but are quite practical. I have a fancy bag that came with one and I use the bag a lot more knowing that I won’t get caught in the rain and damage it.

And to avoid triple posting: I have a shitload of Shein clothes that I bought when I was overweight and wanted to look presentable but didn’t want to buy investment pieces at my then-current size. TBH, other than bras (as a busty lady, high end engineering on those is a must) and shoes I was shocked at how well they held up despite the fact that the material obviously isn’t the best. The only seam that has ever ripped on a Shein item of mine was a pair of pants that I used for dance workouts several times a week, and the seam got caught on something. Other than that I’m looking for people to take it all off my hands bc they don’t fit anymore and everything is in perfect condition and smells good. So frustrating.

Apart from usual kvetching about different colour palettes for men and women, I feel kinda above criticizing fashion lately as long as I have enough choice. But I see a lot of those front hole slippers lately and I feel repulsed. I am not a fan of looking at feet in general, but just buy sandals ffs.

It's as if a shit-shelf german toilet was a shoe.

what is even the point of this

Try asking a German guy why their toilets are like that some time. They don’t really know why and probably think it’s weird and disgusting too, but because it’s a German thing they inevitably feel honourbound to defend it. It’s hilarious.
no matter where I have been in Germany - whether it's North or Central or South - or Austria or Luxembourg or Switzerland, I have not once encountered a toilet like that

I remember them damn everywhere (not from Germany tho, but in a formerly Eastern block country), but they are increasingly rare, you ain't gonna see them in public places and accomodations, but some old workshops, factories and old people homes and maybe schools still have them.

then they might be an East German thing, for I have not once seen them anywhere in West Germany

so the idea behind a lot of this boxy/baggy ill-fitting shit is literally because most of the supply chain line cant be fucked to cut and sew more "complicated" patterns. fashion industry is going to try and sell you on the idea that these shapes and often shittier choices of fabric are meant to be more inclusive of the poor, obese shopper, but the truth is, companies dont want to fucking pay $1 extra for higher quality fabric (meaning, natural fiber over all this composite fiber you see in fucking everything) and they sure as shit dont want to bother with cinches and tapers that cant be done with residual material in the supply chain line (IE, a scrap of fabric thats lying on the cutting room floor) so fuck you, get a tailor if you want your garbage bag to fit good, you fucking sack of shit (PLEASE BUY OUR CLOTHES WE LOVE OUR CONSUMERS)

i fucking hate this industry

EDIT: theyre also going to tell you that a lot of idiotic choices in clothing design is done with climate change in mind. it means absolutely nothing. the fashion industry just wants you to shut up and wear the $400 garbage bag.

I was alternately thinking that it will stop people from critiquing your Ozempic abuse if they can't see how skinny you actually got.

I'm a goth and alt fashion fag, so most of my tastes are probably ugly by most of this thread's standards, but I'm so tired of seeing goth chicks who look like this and I gotta sperg about it a little:
1000057081.jpg

Almost every goth chick online goes for this look it feels like. It's terminally online of me, but once I started seeing it, I now see it everywhere. I genuinely cannot distinguish between chicks who look like this, because so many do. This look mostly doesn't appear irl in the scene btw, or at least not that I have ever seen where I go. This feels like a very performative, tiktok goth look that frankly isn't much better to me than what E girls look like. This look is only good for well curated pictures, which I wouldn't care about, if it wasn't considered 'the standard' now. Another gripe I have is this look being referred to as 'tradgoth' when no, 80's goths did not look like this. It's just so stale, and I hate that the younger gen is being sold that bold, bright colors and experimenting with your look isn't apart of goth anymore because this boring ass, milquetoast cut and paste look reigns supreme when it didn't use to be like that. Hurts me in my fucking soul, man.

I looooove the stylings of the classics, like Souixsie and Patricia Morrison. There's something about the genuinely harsh and somewhat off-putting makeup and clothing that's really interesting to look at. Modern alt fashion has a glaze of Instagram staging on it. It's very preoccupied with being pretty, even in a fashion subculture with a huge component of un-pretty-ness.

This post got me to sign up after lurking for years. I want to sperg about my gothtism but I'll keep it to a minimum. You're right that this current gen doesn't know about what subculture they're adopting. It sucks because music and DIY fashion were a huge part of the punk/goth movement and they look at you blankly when you try to reach out in kind.

For my tangent I will say both punk and goth are effectively dead. However it still lives on in small corners here and there. We need to keep history alive and that can be done through fashion and music and a sharing of history, and sperging lol. The original stemmed from punk and Siouxie spearheaded part it. You had punkgoths aka deathrockers, which broke off into new wave/new romantic like the Cure. Smith says he was never part of the subculture but his band got lumped in. The overall sound was populated by Bauhaus and a lot of groups followed suit but also split into subgenres.
The 90's and technology saw the advent of industrial (NIN) and later cybergoth/punk which lead to Millenial goth like Orgy, brighter silvers mixed with techno rebellion.
Fashion was punk, romantic, industrial, and weird. You can say traditional goth like Morticia Addams, romantic gothics like southern gothic novels too but those two aethetics rarely crossed. But those leaned towards velvet and lace, long hair, pale face, minimal makeup.
Deathrock had punk mixed in so you got mohawks for either sex, big hair, black leather, and stompy boots. Industrial and cyber mixed with neons and corroded metal, welding goggles, fake dreads/cyber dreads, mixed rave fashion and sounds. Cyber was usually the sunshine of the two. Grunge-lite shoe gaze crossed over with new romantic goth in the late 80's / 90's which is what they call whimsicore now, I believe. Another poster talked about the subculture being bright and a little dirty. I'd agree and I think mall goths helped but DIY was a big part of all the goth/punk movements before the age of the internet. It gave it authenticity and soul because you had to make due with what you had. Not everyone could afford Demonia or real bone corsets.

I'll stop before I sperg out more but I love talking about alt goth fashion and music and rarely have a place to do so.

We have an alt fashion thread somewhere around here, but it's not super active. I keep meaning to post in it, and the lolita fashion thread, but I keep forgetting and sometimes don't want to pl too hard about those since those are pretty niche communities and I don't want to end up in the self doxx hall of shame. There is also a goth music thread. Also not super active, but has some neat contributions. My gothtism is all over the place, so I understand you, new friend.
