What did you/do you eat on hot days?

Nowadays it seems like a lot of people look at hot days as an excuse to go out to eat, versus a normal day when they also go out to eat because cooking is for lesser people. And they order the same shit as they do on normal days because Tuesday is Thai Day Dammit and they need their pad see ew fix.

Back when I was growing up, we went out to eat a few times a year, and hot days were not an excuse to find a restaurant with air conditioning.

I remember lots of sandwiches made with whatever was on sale, like bologna or pickle loaf or ham, cheese, normal fixins on regular loaf bread because buns were for fancy people. Or Dad would fire up the grill and we'd cook outside because fuck making the house even warmer by cooking inside. It turned a heat wave into a fun experience. It's a bit warm here today so I made some egg salad sandwiches (which heats up the kitchen a little, but not that much.) Or I'll fire up the grill for a hamburger or grilled fish or something. Keep the house as cool as possible. I have AC now but habits are hard to break.

I can't be the only person who thinks "it's a hot day, so I'm having hot day food." So what was and is your hot day food?

Grilled burgers are my go-to, put some kimchi or kraut on them with mustard and go to town. Sliced jalapenos are pretty solid on them as well.

I also drink wine mixed with ice water when it's hot vs. beer. Figure the Romans would like that one.

Sliced cucumbers and onions in white vinegar, chilled in the fridge

gazpacho. takes about 30 minutes, you only need a knife and a cutting board to make it, and it’s served cold out of a glass. you can eat it with cured meats for protein on a hot summer day.

If I'm working or active, I absolutely crave spicy and hot foods on hot days. The hotter the spicier. I'm also a guy who sweats like a hooker in church when eating spicy foods. I cannot explain why I'm like this.

Sort of the inverse, but I've been deciding lately whether or not to have soup for lunch if it's an overcast day.

As in, I literally go look out the window to see what it's like outside before I go down to the pantry to find a can to open. Lazy canned soup seems like poor weather food.

As thread tax, hot summer nights usually involve cooking outside on the BBQ on the deck. Nothing fancy, but everything tastes better grilled: pork chops, steak, burgers, sausages, sometimes chicken breasts.

Fruits and salads, especially foods with high water content like cucumber and watermelon.

I don't have dedicated summer food stuff. There's not even that much "winter food" that I enjoy. Yeah, soups and stuff that fills the house with "cooked onions" smell but I like pretty much everything.

Homemade ice cream, that's the stuff, though. You can get whole milk and whipping cream and make top-tier ice cream without supporting globohomo (or worse) ice cream brands, plus do flavors that aren't on store shelves.

Go to is light seafood or cold white meat.

Say a rotisserie or fried chicken, cut up into a light salad or in a tortilla wrap, or some scallops pan fried with chorizo, parsley and lemon juice, or just shrimp with things to dip. Light pastas are good to, with creamed mushrooms or pesto.

In fact consider throwing together an antipasti with some deli stuff.
