What Dark Souls boss is your favorite? - ...and why is it Artorias?

Gwyn is the perfect mix of gameplay-to-narrative design in terms of boss fights. His move set is very flexible and allows for him to cancel out of some attacks and a few that have delays which forces the player to think. In that regard he is a perfect final test based on what the four lords taught you (Seeth is big damage/recognizing incoming big hits, Nito is big but his weapon is similar to Gwyn’s so it’s more up close and personal, the bed of chaos teaches you positioning in the arena (the kiln has two pillars you have to be aware of while focusing gwyn, and the 4kings are a dps check that teach you to play risky at times.)

All of this also factors in to the narrative aspect. None of those other bosses were parryable, but through your journey you have become so powerful you can match the the first to link the flame in a 1 on 1 fight.

It’s one of the few times I’ve seen a game nail narrative story telling within gameplay.

Going by difficulty the best Souls boss is engaging with the smug retards in the Souls community without fedposting (impossible).

Serious answer: Nameless King.
*Chuckles in smug superiority and contempt.*

Git gud.
[...] the bed of chaos teaches you positioning in the arena
Above all, the Bed of Chaos teaches you bad game design.

I have so many favourite bosses from the Souls-games, and so it's basically impossible to decide my favourite, but Isshin, the Sword Saint and Great Shinobi Owl/Owl (Father) are amazing boss fights. The fights themselves are nicely balanced, and finally beating them truly makes you feel like you've accomplished something.

Black Dragon Kalameet. He's a bad-ass black dragon that's a bitch to fight, but so damn rewarding. What's not to love?

And let's not forget that awesome track that plays during the fight.

Ceaseless Discharge. Motherfucker just makes an impression, and his impotent sadness is contagious. I don't have to like the fight in order to like the character.

As a bonus, he's pretty chill for a lava monster freak and he only gets mad if I decide to fuck around with his sister's filthy, moldy undergarments. I like to think it's because CD is a morally upright kind of guy, against thievery and/or perversion.

Dude what the fuck are you talking about? Just parry him like 4 times and you win.

That’s if you go for parries sure.
I even highlighted that in my post as an example of narrative matching gameplay. If you choose not to parry what I said is completely true. Not every weapon can parry either so for dozens of builds that’s not an option.

I wish I could play Elden Ring or Bloodborne just cause theyre fucking amazing but as it stands, Slave Knight Gael and Soul of Cinder are the best imo. Gael just cause of backstory, the phase transition, boss arena, soundtrack and fighting style. Soul of Cinder for fighting style, soundtrack and phase transition. DS1 has better exploration progress and map, DS3 has better gameplay world design and bosses. I like how nobody mentioned anything from Sekiro, I really like it and Sword Saint Isshin is a contender for best souls boss but its too linear and drab for me.
