In the Republic of Congo there are roaming gangs of cannibals, going from village to village, stealing children and eating them.

Disasters like Democratic Republic of Congo, Cameroon, Sudan and Somalia come to mind.

Any place where you are going to spend most of your life afraid of warlords chopping off your head, raping your children and burning your village to the ground are not places anyone should have to live. Nothing western even compares. That said, it's just not plausible to settle all of these refugees into the west and just have it be business as usual afterwards. As we've seen, it just doesn't work. But the countries the refugees come from seem incapable of fixing their problems so their people have a safe place to live. I think we're just in a bad time right now.

I just finished reading the book "Surprise, Kill, Vanish" by Annie Jacobsen and I think Afghanistan definitely is up there too. Basically, she talked with the US guys training the Afghan soldiers to fight the Taliban and they told her that the Afghan soldiers were all illiterate, couldn't count higher than 30, didn't even know their own ages, constantly were stoned on opium, and used to rape each other as a past-time. The raping each other thing was so bad that Hepatitis was a perpetual problem and some of the Afghan guys would try to pick assignments based on where they would get raped the least. What fucking nightmare of a country lol.

I think it's the DRC, Afghanistan and North Korea. They kind of hit the three main ways of becoming supremely fucked up:

Congo: Insane, unending ethnic and religious conflicts leading to millions of deaths and total devastation of the country
Afghanistan: Religious fanaticism combined with profound ignorance
North Korea: State oppression perfected into a ruthless, indomitable machine

Badness is measured in different scales. These two articles talk about similar countries but use different measurements. Venezuela is shit, but it used to be decent enough that there's still roads and shit in place, but there's constant shit going on and it's a clamor for survival. Places in Africa buttfucked by civil war are probably the worst, adding in no healthcare, no education, no nothing, you got a perfect storm of misery. They didn't even have a modern fall to have some of the privileges, they never had some of the good stuff to build in the past 50 years or so. Afghanistan should get an honorable mention for always being at war in a shitty mountainside.

The first article uses the Misery Index which is a terrible measure of how bad a country is to live in. For example, the misery indices for CAR, Niger, Chad and Ivory Coast are lower (better) than the indices for the USA, Canada, Australia, and most European countries. Argentina and Lebanon are in the worst-10 list by index, but there isn't a single country on the African mainland that I would consider more liveable than those.

The second link though is pretty accurate. When you get down to the depths of CAR, Afghanistan, DRC, etc. it's pretty much all the same. Just pure misery and hell apart from the few extremely fortunate, extremely corrupt elites.
