Season 2 is actually pretty different from Season 1, though in kind of subtle ways that you may not notice when watching but just kind of feel in your subconscious. The humor is more manic and the show more excitable and there's more humor and jokes that lean towards the older audience the show found itself stuck with after Season 1. Season 1 is very much entirely a show for young girls. In Season 2 they realize "Hey, we have this huge adult audience, let's try and pander to them a little bit".
Lauren faust is like the antithesis of most modern cartoonists. Instead of trying to hijack what shouldve been a fun silly kids show with making it her own personal therapy session, she actually set out to make a fun show for kids first and foremost and any of the more adult content was practically network decided with her leaving during season 2.
