Egyptian deities are all kind of nutty, I'm a fan of Sobek myself. He's like a Sonic OC sometimes.

  • As you might imagine, he's animalistic and aggressive, being a crocodile-man
  • But he's generally considered a mostly good-aligned protector deity, lots of mummified crocodiles posed with mummified baby crocs in their mouths (crocodilians are one of the few reptiles to protect their young) and he was viewed as a protector of Egypt and also used to ward against bad luck
  • He's a fertility god, his name is believed to be derived from the word for "to impregnate", one of his titles was "he who eats while he mates"
  • He got entwined into other gods myths (probably for political reasons) and ended up being a sun and healing god as well
  • His main place of worship was a city called, for obvious reasons, Crocodilopolis
  • One of the pharaohs was claimed to be a living incarnation of him and this was written about him "Unis is Sobek, green of plumage, with alert face and raised fore, the splashing one who came from the thigh and tail of the great goddess in the sunlight ... Unis has appeared as Sobek, Neith's son. Unis will eat with his mouth, Unis will urinate and Unis will copulate with his penis. Unis is lord of semen, who takes women from their husbands to the place Unis likes according to his heart's fancy"

I once heard of a legend in Portugal about this female saint who prayed to God to make her as ugly as possible, because she didn't want to inspire the sin of lust among men. The next day, she woke-up with a beard. Any relation?
