Got back into lifting weights about a month ago.
Age has been a problem. There's pain from gains and then there's pain from being old.
I guess all I can say is power through it. The results are worth the pain.
Until we are 45+ we still got some of that young kid, puppy dog energy left in us dudes, gotta put it to good use. Men mature at their 30s so if you're in that age bracket, you're in the prime of your life. Indeed, power through it and the results will follow.

Ahh, finally a post that is not "If you're not 18-25 you're hopeless at the gym"

*sigh*

I had been considering giving up on the weights

Nah don't give up on the ironpill.

“The glory of young men is their strength: and the beauty of old men is the gray head.”
“For bodily exercise profiteth little: but godliness is profitable unto all things, having promise of the life that now is, and of that which is to come.”
Now go forth and lift.

I got blackpilled because i've been doing this for years with not a lot of gains and every time I get modest gains some shit happens and I lose it all :(
Don't give up just yet. Life is honestly too short to spend feeling like shit and being weak for no real reason. If anything, lifting is a motivating goal to push towards and makes you look good if you do it even slightly close to right.

I'm benching 3 plates, squatting 4, and deadlifting 5 for 3-5 reps now across all of them. Having a fucking blast doing it. It only took around 5 months to get here.

Did you ever try to see what's inhibiting you? Getting enough protein, enough calories, following a good program, etc?

I doubt it's age tbh. A persons joints get weaker fairly early in life, but if you're not experiencing joint issues, well, it's not like your test levels get halved or whatever. Unless you're 70. There's a myriad of reasons that are more likely than age. Julius Maddox got the world record in benchpress at age 33. For clean and jerk the record was set by a 29 year old.

The only other thing with age is that keeping low bodyfat with more musclemass does get harder after 20, 23 and 25 but unless you really want to be a twink, a lack of gains is probably not due to age.

Weight lifting is, imo, one of the few sports where you actually reach a peak relatively late. As opposed to shit like gymnastics where you start by age 4 and retire at 25

It's probably mostly lifestyle, I think. You guys are right, though. The worst thing one can do is let himself go. I need to get my ass back to the weight room.

Good attitude!

I've come to think that I just don't want to let myself deteriorate into a pathetic old person who can't look after themselves and is riddled with ailments.

There will come a time where trying to push myself to lift heavier is no longer viable, but I am hoping to still be fit and healthy in old age.

I started training at 29 (properly, at least) so it's never too late.

you dont look like gains or do you stagnate on your lifting?
I slowly added 5kg of muscle over the last months(work gym is open again) and i look the same but ohh boy i feel so much stronger.

running helps alot with that. i currently do 5k 4 times a week and it keeps the fat from my ass.

Both. It will always happen that I'll reach a point in terms of what I can lift I cannot break. I managed to break it up a bit over the last months but now i'm back from start again.

Not true, actually, perhaps I'm being too negative. I can be back at the doors of my known limits in one month, but when I reach it I will struggle to break it without break form. Perhaps that's why I'm limited in the way of gains. I cannot break records.

Whenever I am hitting a limit I take a break from that particular exercise for a few weeks and work on breaking a max on something else, more often than not when I come back to it with a clear head I can break through.

I'm sure there is some science shit behind this, but I just find the mental break from the frustration helps a ton.

Well, perhaps my current break it's not so dramatic. I've not trained for a while but seems like I've lost weight mostly in the way of fat. Muscle too, obviously, but not that much. But I was feeling a bit self conscious to be honest...

I read somewhere that a 3 weeks break sometimes is useful to reset the body. Who knows. Let's see how it goes in the next months.

What hours do you guys find best to go to the gym?

You’re eating too little then, no wonder you don't have any progress. I have worked out for a few years and I haven't gotten any real progress other than a more toned body. Point is, I started seeing progress when I became serious about bulking. If you're a small-eater naturally, then it's going to be very uncomfortable.
Liquid foods is your friend.

My gym got an app for how full in % the gym is. So when that number is low.

What program do you follow? Have you been shown proper technique for the main compound lifts?

Food and sleep are also huge factors, what/how much do you eat and how much do you sleep?
