Didn't they have to delay the dub for quite some time? I presumed it was some SJWs refusing to work on the show after the outrage started brewing. Surprised they didn't cut it.

I know the latest Sword Art Online had censorship at the raw distributor level. Some rape scene had some camera cropping fuckery, and it affected all the publishers because the raw Aniplex(?) gave them was pre-censored.

I.e., the worst possible scenario is unfolding: They're convincing Japan to pre-censor shit for the US to avoid the SJW screeching.

Even as a joke, I feel like it hits a bit too close to home for him. Cause even with all the support to fight back, this shit’s still pretty damn depressing for even happening in the first place.

I honestly think it was bureaucratic and licensing shennanigans. Funimation and Crunchyroll ended their partnership (where CR streamed subs while Funi did the dubs) a few months back, and a few ongoing and upcoming shows were in limbo. In fact, Shield Hero was advertised on Funimation for a bit, which leads me to think that CR would've streamed the sub while Funi did the dub. Then the split and bureaucratic meddling happened, and CR got the show in its entirety. As far as I can tell nothing has been censored in the dub so I'll Occam's Razor and assume it was just stupid licensing issues.

No comment on SAO, haven't seen it.

As for censoring... I think the reason anime hasn't gone completely liberal is because Japan is still pretty conversative by Murcan standards, and unless they want to radically rewrite the shows a faithful adaptation will preserve that. You can point to egregious line changes in Prison School, Dragon Maid, Girlfriend Is A Gal, and Interviews With Monster Girls, but honestly that's only 4 shows out of dozens, and 4 (5?) episodes out of hundreds, and a dozen lines or so out of hundreds of thousands.

Shield Hero is supposedly still coming to Funimation at some time. It's still adversided on their blog and when asked about it the official twitter for Shield Hero just keeps saying it's only on Crunchyroll for now. So that makes me think it will pop up on Funimation at some point in the future. Maybe when the dub finishes airing.

I think those examples do show that Funimation was trying to move that direction though, slowly boiling the frog, you know. You can tell it was calculated because every single one has been an ecchi. I wouldn't be surprised if Funi wanted to try adding some wokeness and were hoping that people would be too embarassed to admit they were watching ecchi to publicly complain. I mean, Jamie Marchi is involved with at least three of those that I know for certain, and I think she might have been involved with the other two, but it doesn't seem like Funimation gave her any flack after the backlash. It's a pretty concerning trend.

The thing is, shows that aren't currently hosted on Funimation still have their series pages up. So I dunno. Maybe Funimation has physical release rights? That might be it. Other than that, Funimation has no involvement in the dub. An LA-based studio is doing the adaptation.

Dunno if I'd call Monster Girls an ecchi, but I can see your point. As for the Prison School, Jamie was the head writer, and it was Tyson Rhinehart (I think) who actually wrote in the Gamergate line. Sure, she had to okay the line, but it technically wasn't her. in Gal she was just a voice actress and had nothing to do with the script.... though, sure, she could strongarm the writers. Again, Occam's Razor. For Dragon Maid, which Jamie wrote, the line was blatantly political, though someone dude interpreted the raw Japanese dialogue and concluded the line wasn't completely out of left field. For Monster Girls... Jamie was again an actress without creative input as far as I know. Kristen McGuire was the writer for that, and it's the most harmless of the examples we have, I think. Her other scripts have been good so far.

I thought that the dub of Shield Hero was already casted?

Edit: Just researched it and Funi has casted them and looks like it's gonna be done in LA and not in Texas which explains why Rial and co. are not there.

He's stepping down as CEO soon (if he hasn't already) and I bet he wants to leave a parting gift so to speak.

Weebs and anime fans pay attention to companies altering anime, manga, games and etc. since the late 80ies. Especially since Viz had been a huge offender in censoring certain mangas. It's the normies who either don't notice or more concerning don't give a damn about censorship or Americanization.

Viz heavily censored Yu-Gi-Oh. Reading the original Japanese is a trip since Yami Yugi is total psychopath that has no problem with straight up murder including lighting a guy on fire alive. I've heard whispers of Pokemon Adventures getting toned down a bit since it's really brutal but I can't confirm since I don't read Adventures.
