Been seeing a lot of people comparing the art direction, specifically the girl which is the one thing everyone is focused on, to Totally Spies, Wakfu(never watched it), and a couple of other ones I haven't heard of. Usually these types of projects try to ape a specific cartoon and come out looking worse so I think it's pretty cool that Planetronika pulls from like sources to create something that could actually have existed amongst it's inspirations. I don't think I have seen anyone replicate this 2000s euro-anime style let alone looking like how my child brain remembered it looking.

I swear I've seen this exact style for eyes, but I can't put my finger on where.
Anyway, a lot of retards on Xitter and /co/ are calling it goonslop and Y2Kslop, as well as the pilot not really having a plot nor clear premise(true tho); On the other hand, great reception on Newgrounds and as of me typing, almost 700k views on Youtube. Impressive for a cartoon that came out of nowhere. Nostalgia bait is another term I've been seeing too and it sorta worked on me. I've been reminiscing about those hot summer days between elementary school grades bringing my bionicles to the neighborhood pool since. Gated, no lifeguards, trees all around. Us crackers had the afternoons all to ourselves cuz the Asians went in the morning and the Indians in the evening. It was a more simple time, a more innocent time. Hope this guy makes more.

Yeah, it’s really impressive how accurate they’ve managed to nail that particular era of cartoon and its style. Was pretty entertaining too.

Twitter losing their shit is just icing on the cake.

I gotta disagree, I don't think this is a case of "Libtards seething that the girl's attractive", this cartoon just seems bad tbh. I 100% agree with the Y2Kslop goonslop nostalgia bait accusations. I mean, it's called Planetronika, the alien's called FREESTYLE the girl's called BUTTERFLY, she's a SPACE EXPLORER (Which we never see in the pilot) and the pilot is about BASKETBALL. Genuinely sounds like a show you'd see in GTA, it's such an inauthentic hodge podge of 2000s tropes that it almost feels like satire. And the ass shots are so excessive that I'm convinced it was originally supposed to be porn but the creator repurposed it. The animation's also obnoxious.

I'll tell you where you've seen that style before, from a "How to draw anime" book in your local library. It's the generic western anime style with none of the individual charm, literally just Great Value.

The cherry on top is the creator blocking anyone who DARES to point out the excessive focus on Butterfly's ass, which I just can't respect. If they were telling him "Noooo she's not black enough, she's not fat enough" or some other SJW shit then I could understand, but that is just legitimate criticism he's blocking off because it hurts his feelings and stings his wiener. I shouldn't be able to tell that the creator has a secret porn stash as I'm watching, not that I'm judging him for it, but I don't care. So he should stop shoving that implication in my face every few seconds of the pilot. It's very porn-brained. A better example is Frankie from Foster's, she's clearly supposed to be an attractive lady, but her ass isn't on constant display and the "Wow Frankie's hot" moments are just that. Moments. Not everytime she's on screen.

All in all I agree with the 4.5/10 rating given in the cartoon industry thread. Bland, inauthentic, unoriginal, made for no reason than for 30 yr olds to go "Ohhh, I remember that!", and way too much ass. Animation is in your face and feels more like a parody of anime than an appreciation. The pilot tells us nothing about the characters and pretty much nothing goes on. My advice to other creators is to stop trying to copy an entire fucking era, if you genuinely love an era, inspiration will come a LOT more naturally than naming your protags fucking "Freestyle" and "Butterfly".

And most importantly, YOUR trademark will still be visible. Your work should be your work, if your selling pitch is the fact that your work ISN'T your work but instead a fusion of other people's shit, then what's the point of me watching you? I could just go watch Totally Spies or Pokemon. There has to be more than nostalgia, otherwise it's no better than a Disney live action remake.

I'm so fucking tired of seeing everything get called goonslop just because it has a conventionally attractive character in it. You know goonslop when you see it. It's not a debatable thing. It's something everyone can agree on.

THIS is goonslop. The only purpose it serves is to get people jerking off to it. There are no artistic qualities it tries to achieve aside from this. A character showing a bit of midriff or wearing a swimsuit is not fucking goonslop. People actually dress like that, people go to the beach and they wear swimsuits, it's normal. The only explanation I can think of for twitter retards (henceforth known as "twittards") slapping that label on everything, is that they grew up in the era of the modern internet where everything becomes hypersexualized less than thirty minutes after discovery. People made gijinkas of the first known photo of a black hole, and then started drawing porn of it. A new pokemon is revealed, or a new outfit some pikachu wears, boom, immediately hundreds of drawings of that pikachu getting fucked is on your timeline. Don't hate the artist that made the design, hate the gooners mass producing porn the moment they see an opportunity for it.

I mean, what is there to Butterfly other than the fact that she's attractive? I got no sense of personality in the pilot, we didn't even get to see her do what is supposedly her job, space exploring. Literally her main purpose in the pilot was looking pretty. Just because it's not watermelon sized tits doesn't mean it's not still distracting, annoying, and makes me think less of the creator that not only can he not go 7 minutes not fawning over his waifu, but anyone who points out the objective fact that he is makes him so butthurt he blocks them like a pussy.

As you yourself said, you can tell the creator really likes her. That's not good, it's distracting. In this pilot, I have learned more about the creator than I have the character.

Just cause it could be worse doesn't mean it's not still bad.

These people were nowhere to be seen when RubberRoss's furry cat character got even more porn after Gameoverse came out. (Very unfortunate timing for Planetronika)

Tbf there isn't much to Planetronika besides the style and some choice shots but it's funny to me that this attitude goes away when the next shiny thing appears.

Can't reply to your entire post but this is unfortunate to hear. I do agree with a lot of what you said though. The plot sucks, it's bland, and Butterfly has way too much focus; Major pacing issues as well.

The how to draw anime crap was something that came to mind as well, though most of the faux-anime from Europe had that look.

That's mainly why people are mad at him on Twitter, the first guy describing it as "They're mad she's attractive" way oversimplified it. Essentially someone made a joke about how much ass there is and he blocked them, so people kept doing it more just to piss him off and there's people who can't even watch it cause they made one lighthearted joke about the creator and he blocked them forever.

The "Why can't a creator find his work attractive?" discourse is stupid too imo. Cause let's be so honest, let's be so real. Literally all of the people saying this would be joining in on the gooner accusations if Butterfly was fat, or black with 4c hair, or trans, or wore a hijab. But because she's conventionally attractive (And they'll let you know how conventionally attractive she is), SUDDENLY creators are allowed to do whatever they want. And this guy is allowed to do whatever he wants, cause what he wants is what they want. The heavy focus on Butterfly is only ok to them cause they're gooning to her too.

It's like if you mixed the Maximum Ride mangas with Pokemon, that's what first came to mind for me

I'm surprised that it's a cartoon that seems like it's genuinely having fun with itself where as i didn't hate watching Gameoverse but it just feels like another Glitch Production show with the same theme of nhilisitc cynicism that has gotten old with their shows. As more of a 2000s kid, the style appeals to me a little more especially when in this case that ACTUALLY capture it a little better. Reminds of the shows back then like for example the Teen Titans show in 03 or Avatar in 05 that did a nice job translating anime but with a western twist (and isn't annoying about it.)
