Ways of holding a tablet pen?

@Jewelsmakerguy Oddly enough, I didn't have problems with it before. It just kinda... started. Between a slew of college deadlines (that mainly turn into guessing what the examining body even wants), house moving and several other things, it might be stress/anxiety related muscle weakness or something?
That could be it. You might need to do some exercises if that really is the case and if it isn't, just do them anyways. I'll probably help.

Guess it can't hurt. Any links to examples?

Gave the "rested pen" thing a try, holding it nearly horizontal does let me ease a little bit. Can't stop myself from pressing with the finger for now (screw you, muscle memory) but for now I actually moved my finger a bit further up, it's still getting pressure but at least it's not bending as far the wrong way.

Ended up with this at the end of it, just a scrap but still.

Yayyy best Ganondorf.

I have a bit of a problem holding my pen too. I tried Mythos's method and this was the result.

It helped, most of the time my lines look wobbly and shaky. But at least they look kinda decent now! ^_^;

Most of the time, however, I just do what Dr. Meme does. It usually takes a whole group of paramedics to calm me down, though.

Hey @MayMay, just want to say I've been having the same problems too with my tablet pen. I think it might be the way the pen is shaped, but I do end up with a bit of cramp here and there. So, I'm going to definitely try out some of the techniques people have suggested and post some pictures as well.

I also placed several books on the bottom of my tablet to give my wrist a better angle. And it does help.

Also does your pen make a scratchy noise when you draw on your tablet? Mine does each time I so as much draw a line and its been bothering me quite a bit. I was thinking of putting cloth on top of it. Any advice?

I don't think cloth would be practical, but some people tape paper over theirs.

I have the Intuos Pro myself and I figured out that a lot of the problems I was having with it were due to the pen settings. You might wanna play around with those a bit until you get the kind of consistency you want with the linework. It also depends on what the settings are in something like Adobe illustrator.

I also find that the pens that these tablets usually come with aren't really as good as say getting one of their ink pens.

So I recently brought a few different types nibs for my tablet. The ones I brought are the Flex nibs, the Stroke nibs, and the Hard felt nibs. I'm going to try each type of nibs to see if they are any better than the standard nibs, plus, I like trying out new things. Hopefully this can help with drawing on a tablet.

I should point out that the size of the tablet may also contribute to your discomfort. You should be drawing with your shoulder and elbows while using your wrist is for detail drawing.

Seems to happen kind of often now, like my hand will just suddenly start hurting out of nowhere. Ironically drawing is one of the few times I can ignore it now.
Ah well, getting it looked at today!

I hold my tablet pen the same way I hold a regular pen or pencil. The thing is, I hold pens oddly in general (and all attempts to change my grip as a child were futile--holding it any other way makes my hand hurt and I find it harder to control, dunno why), so...yeah.

Here's a pic of me holding a regular pen. Apologies for my dirty fingernails, I really need to trim them today.

You know, I get the same thing and its because I have carpel tunnel syndrome.

I used a tablet pen before when I was testing tablets out at Best Buy last year. I use a tablet pen like how I use a regular pen. I don't have a picture to post of me holding a pen, but the best way to hold a tablet pen is use it like how you use a pen in general. Practice writing with it several times on a blank note page of your tablet. How long have you used a tablet pen?
