Was Lovecraft meming his racism?

While being a racist was a significant part of who he was it was not nearly all he was. Lovecraft was so much more than that and anyone who wants to reduce him to his faults is an ass. An illiterate, incurious ass. I get so annoyed when people dismiss him for racism, especially when they have not even read his works. Lovecraft is an author who deserves serious consideration and thought, and not the clickbait dismissal of buzzfeed.

For example I always know someone is full of shit when they use "The shadow over Innsmouth" as proof that he was against race mixing. The shadow over innsmouth was about an epidemic. Sailors from a foreign land bring back with them a contagion that is spread through sexual contact and causes insanity over time. ITS A METAPHOR FOR FUCKING SYPHILIS. Not race mixing you blue haired assholes!

Lovecraft was truly in a league of his own and to say that he was a racist implies that he was akin to other racists, he was not. Lovecrafts racism manifested itself in very strange ways. For example he thought that Black and Mexican people did not dream when they went to sleep. His racism was quite wacky and in typical fashion much more sophisticated than the popular stereotypes of both modern and contemporary times.

His racism was, perhaps very fittingly, informed by a profound fear of the unknown. It is wrong to say that he lived in a time when such things were common. He was profoundly racist even for his time and his friends constantly gave him shit for it. But you must remember that he was not like most people. His father and mother both ended up in the mad house and died there. His Mother particularly mistreated him and even dressed him up as a girl whenever she would bring him out. Both his aunts were batshit and he was tormented constantly at school. He married a very domineering and callous woman only because he was afraid to say no to her. His only refuge in life was his uncles library. His uncle was the only person who properly understood him emotionally and provided for him and just as they had become closest his uncle died. How can anyone expect a tormented recluse to be a paragon of social norms?

Lovecraft did overcome his past towards the end and had he lived longer he surely would have taken his rightful place amongst the pantheon of American fiction writers with the likes of Mark Twain. He became a much more open person towards the end and even began to describe himself as a socialist, this from a person who used to edit a magazine called "The Conservative".

The Cthulu Mythos and the Dream Cycle along with his one off stuff are literary canons that deserve serious academic consideration and I think it will be the eternal shame of mankind if Lovecrafts works ever be relegated into the hands of some race realist freak.

For all the reasons you and others mentioned, I doubt a writer as distinguished as Lovecraft would be panned by today's critics for his literary racism. I'm neither a fan nor detractor, but it's clear to me that Lovecraft was not a white supremacist. On The Creation of Niggers reads like something out of Encyclopædia Dramatica. Clearly he was self aware of the usage of the n-word, and the poem is humorous as ever.

One thing I want to mention- and I noted this in a post on my profile once- Lovecraft, based on his letters, could be classified as an early example of the Euphoric Atheist.

I feel like some of his best work shares his enthusiasm over adjectives with his worst work, but rather than being a mess, in those better cases it turns the work into something hypnotic and dreamlike. Lovecraft was one of those cases where he has his ups and down, but when he's on, he's on fire.

I mean how many various racial nationalists have you seen that actually fuck other races? I mean we got plenty of them on this site alone. There are quite a few black and white supremacists that really wanna fuck the opposite races they hate.

They literally wanna hate fuck them. Also I just want an excuse to reference this movie.

 
From what I read he was pretty xenophobic towards anyone who wasn't Anglo-Saxon, and considered English culture to be superior to all, but with time he moderated his opinions, towards his death he thought that most cultures and peoples are unique and should be preserved, more in line with modern ethno-nationalists.
 
Lovecraft was racist as shit even by the standards of the 1920's. I think there's this stereotype of people back then all being literal nazis, but it's just not true. Most people weren't elitist, paranoid, weirdos like Lovecraft either. Lovecraft was the kind of guy who lived in a fantasy where him and his family were royalty, and everybody else in the world was literally subhuman.

You know that annoying teacher who in school when you asked "can I go to the bathroom?" said "I don't know, can you?". He was that person, but he also thought asking the question at all meant you needed to be gassed.
