Hamburger's come from the hamburg steak, a German dish named after the German city "Hamburg". The "hamburg steak" was originally just a cooked ground beef circle on a plate before it was brought over to America where the Americans decided it needed to be portable and the way to do it was via the addition of carbs.
The name Hamburg comes from Hammaburg, the name of a castle that was built in that area of Germany, "burg" meaning castle and Hamma most likely referring to a geographic feature such as a bend in the river or enclosed pastureland. The way you say "ham" in German is "schinken" if we're talking modern German, "scinco" if we're talking old German. The modern English "ham" comes from the old English "hamm" and not anything Germanic.
The convergence of two different hams is just a quirk of language evolution. Not arguing your point, just explaining why it be like it do.
