It's also based on the Steins;Gate Elite script which has about 30% of the script cut. If it's just a 1:1 remake of Elite with new sprites I don't really see the point in this being made but I like some of the new Moeka sprites. Hopefully there's a catch here or something new.

There is apparently a new ending. As for new stuff, Christina got an upgrade

I got my steam copy of the OG game, so i don't really need this game, but i might if the changes are substantual.

I like Huke's artstyle still but idk I miss the kind of grimy, moldy look all the sprites have. It's too clean now, it's like they've sanded off all the grime. Also everyone goes up a cup size or two every subsequent entry after S;G, by the time they remake 0 Maho is going to be a D cup.

Since people brought up Stein's Gate I want to talk about the Ladder system of VNs, where the game is a linear story with the heroine routes being early exit points for an ending. It was the case for Eustia and rare for VNs. It's advantage is that there is no real common route with a massive split, so the writing and branching is relatively easy. The issue is that it forces you into "character episodes" that can be completely disconnected to the main plot, and some characters disappear until they are needed back. Stein's Gate has two great examples of when it works really well and when it sucks literal balls.

The good case - Amane:
1778279987865.png
Flows really well into the story to the point I (due to not understanding the route system) didn't understand why I got an ending credits.

The bad case - Luka:

"Let's stop the plot so we can have a gender bender no homo segment".

Soul vs. Soulless.

Its actually unreal how much I hate it. They need to take sci adv out back and put it to rest at this point. They won't though, so get ready for Steins;Gate Re:Boot:Re:Load in 5 years when their next project tanks. Edit: I really hate how they get rid of Mayuri's spiky hair; it was a unique point of contrast to have on such a friendly character. 0 did it to and sucked there, but then again that whole fucking disaster needs to be thrown into the fire.

It's amazing how much Steins;Gate was lightning in the bottle, none of the others come close to it (I'd say Zero is the second best but there is a big gap there). Chaos;Head was a mess though it was intriguing here and there and you had to deal with a pretty disgusting protag for most of it. And Robotics;Notes was just shit, my god did I hate everything from that game and it killed any interest in any future projects from the studio.

The original Steins;Gate artstyle has an ethereal air to it that all other versions seem to butcher and wasn't even kept for Zero. Good thing I got the original and not elite.

Huke's artstyle basically started, for a lack of a better term, getting rounded off right after with BRS. His first work vs everything else getting standardized for production basically.

On the road to danganronpa v3, finished udg and the 3 anime.

It was better than I thought it would be. I thought it would be mid-bad, but it turned out to be surprisingly alright. I liked the much smaller cast of characters because it gave Komaru and Toko a lot of screentime, as compared to DR1 and 2 where one of my major complaints is that there is just not enough time to give an entire class adequate development. Even with the 5 kids counted as main characters, what’s still under half of a DR class. I played the game in roughly 45 minute chunks because that was about as long as I could go before I started to get bored of the gameplay. It was serviceable, but I would have rather been playing Dead Space. The presentation was really good, I especially liked all the menu illustrations.

Chapters 1 and 2 I found not very interesting in terms of plot, so I guess its time to talk about chapter 3. I had no idea what I was in for. I’m almost willing to go bat for this chapter. Almost. Its the retarded shots of Kotoko’s underwear that makes me not want to bother defending CH3. I already know there are going to be a lot of moralfags on youtube or reddit or whatever talking about how the minigame and Kotoko’s story is le heckin bad and problematic mm’kay, but I think there is merit to it. Chapter 5 was the best part of the game, particularly the section between last 2 bosses. I like that the game makes you choose whether to break the remote or not and doesn’t give you any help through a side character or something. My gamer/storytelling sense told me not to destroy, but I didn’t have a real reason at first. I did sort of figure out the whole war thing before it was mentioned though. Before they brought up the bombs in the helmets, I realized that the kids would die without the monokumas to defend them, which was why I kept choosing not to break it. That whole scene with the controller was really good and almost justifies the entire game. I also liked it because it was just a straightforward visual novel section at that point. I see why some people wouldn’t like this game. I’m not in a rush to replay it or anything, but I think it was overall a worthwhile entry. I did predict though after playing the first DR that we would eventually have confirmation that the tragedy was real, which was proven true with DR2 and definitely here. I’m not sure to what degree all of this undercuts the ending of the first game. Also, they quadruple down on the mind control stuff, which I didn’t like in the first game and really don’t like here. I just think the kids vs adults war could come about in a more intelligent way. Shirokuma and Kurokuma’s plan was pretty interesting otherwise, and I wish the writers had come up with ways to get to that war other than forcing it with scifi magic. Also the yellow paint was eye rolling, forgot to put that anywhere.

I hated this. The future arc was boring as fuck because its nothing but a bunch of randos that get killed off until the plot finally goes somewhere. The environment is fucking lame too, its just some boring ass building where the power went out. The first half of despair was decent, if far too fast, and should have just been incorporated into DR2 somehow. The second half of the despair arc made me want to become the joker, and was the reason I hated this show. How the fuck is the motivation minigame infamous when this show does a FUCKING LOBOTOMY on screen. Everything I've disliked about this series, the memory theft in 1 + the offhand mention of brainwashing in 2 that is the core of the story + the fucking chum bucket helmets in UDG, was dialed up by 10^infinity. Everything this series had going for it was wiped out. The first game had a dark comedy element to it, but even though I complained that it wasn't dark enough, 3 was the worst of both worlds. It didn't have the intrigue or mystique that the first game set up around the tragedy, because apparently it was all just mind control instead of the cascade of violence starting from the 5th floor massacre as DR1 alluded to. So why should I give a fuck about anything if no one is responsible for their actions? But then it also doesn't have any of the dark comedy/fun vibes of D1 (which were in part due to the over the top executions) because all of the violence is so mundane in scale and also in a straightforward, generic anime style. I hate that they keep trying to make the outside world make sense in relation to the first game, because its destined to fail due to how goofy the first game was allowed to be due to taking place in a controlled environment and under the control of a bpd thrillseeker. This show was fanfiction made into an official production. THE VILLAIN LITERALLY WHIPS OUT A MIND CONTROL PHONE APP LIKE ITS PORN SLOP. This anime is one of the worst things I've ever seen, and anyone who claims v3 ruined the series even though this exists is a retard. There's literally nothing that can ruin it further. I have played some of the prologue for v3, and my suspicion knowing the ending is controversial is that danganronpa is going to be revealed as a failing tv show and everything else that happened so far will be retconned into being fake. Based on this show and its consequences, it won't even matter. This show managed to do something I didn’t think would happen, which was make me not even care that Ibuki was revived.

The anime was just so brain meltingly bad that I've lost most of my interest and have to take a bit of time off from it. If I go into v3 right now, I'm not going to judge it fairly.

Edit: The only possible explanation for the anime being this fucking bad (other than the writer/the production was a hack job) is that it was bad on purpose as some sort of meta 4th wall breaking thing where it brings despair into the real world through due to how much it sucks and ruins everything else.

Chaos;Head was a mess though it was intriguing here and there and you had to deal with a pretty disgusting protag for most of it
I just finished off Chaos;Head Noah a few days ago and I really enjoyed it actually. The conspiracy side of things felt way more in focus than in Steins;Gate and the antagonistic force felt way more like they were working in the shadows than in Steins;Gate (though the situation in Steins;Gate is different than in Chaos;Head, also been a bit since I've gone through Steins;Gate) along with the gang stalking stuff gave the game a really unique atmosphere that I really liked and haven't really seen elsewhere. I also personally don't have issues with Takumi and I think the story wouldn't have really worked if he wasn't an antisocial sperg and was more sociable.

It actually makes me a little sad the other games in the series departed from that sort of atmosphere but it definitely seems like they wanted to make each sub-series distinct, I'm intending to play through the whole SciAdv series though and I'm currently replaying Steins;Gate though it's been a while since my last play through but seeing how the concepts connect knowing the context of Chaos;Head is pretty neat, I'll see how Robotics;Notes and the other games go though.

I'm approaching the end of the common route in Meteor World Actor. The girls are all good enough and have their unique shticks, my favorite has to be Komachi. It's also consistently pretty funny, not Majikoi levels but enough to make me chuckle.

Sorry to be a doubleposting fag, but I took a break from Meteor World Actor to play Nukitashi and it's unironically pretty good. It's easily up there with Majikoi for out of pocket quotes. Obviously not life changingly profound, but the pacing is brisk, the action is good and the jokes land.

The MC, Junnosuke is hilarious and a goldmine for random.txt quotes.

Albeit I will recommend you play with the Nukitashi Improvement Patch which removes a lot of the problems with the official english translation.

Yume Miru Kusuri is a game I periodically downloaded wanting to play for literally the last 20 years, always being turned off by how it was called rather dark and I like my happy endings (pun unintended). After the disappointment with Eustia latter parts, decided to finally take the plunge.

First of all it is a pretty short-ish game of around 10 hours (meaning I probably spent more time debating playing it than it would have taken to actually play it).

It is pretty good, and might have been amazing with a bit more budget and taking some routes to deeper places. It's a straightforward three girls route game, no bullshit true ending. Just hope the other two girls don't ruin their lives without you. Also it's really not as dark as I've heard, even the bad endings don't show any nasty fates for the main character or heroines (at least directly). It reminded me a lot of Clannad with a basically non-existent side cast, but it also has a very dreamlike quality with the main character "warping" to the next scenes or characters acting in an exaggerated way. I'll go route by route since it's worth talking about.

Shiraki: Very standard bullying victim plot, but the game does show how it fucks with her outlook on life, and seeking a safety net. She fucks the main character to guilt trip him to be with her, which is tragic, dark and realistic, but never really dwelt on, which could have added more conflict. It's a good route but by nowadays it's very standard affair. Really great ending though.

Kirimiya: School president miss perfect heiress to elites that grows dissatisfied with her normal life and stretches the boundary of what she can do, growing more and more extreme. It's an ok route but feels half finished without any big event or confrontation at the end.

Nekoko: Drug addict weirdo dragging the main character into her drug fueled escapades. Probably the best route with a good dose of comedy and drama. Nekoko herself is hilariously lolcow that dropkicks random people because they annoy her. I think it is in the category of having a better bad endings than the good one that feels way too safe.

The story has a strong theme of putting a mask due to society expectations. Shiraki closes herself completely due to the bullying, Kirimiya is sick of the facade and lashes out, Nekoko uses drugs to remove any inhibition to keep her mask. The main character himself just goes through the motion because he is afraid of letting down his family (this is sadly more said than actually displayed, and the main character suffers from being too passive through the routes). Almost everyone will play the routes in the same order and it is interesting how they go more extreme places with different levels of disconnection from the outside environment.

Overall I recommend. Also want to give kudos for Tsubaki, who might be a faggot, but ranks up the as one of the best VN bros.

VNs as a genre seem to be bugfree or have almost no bugs due to the simple design of them, but have there been VNs that were so buggy that they reached or almost reached levels of other games with many bugs like Fallout 76 or Cyberpunk 2077?

This question lead me to a rabbit hole, I remember there was an episode of The World God Only Knows that was completing an absolutely broken VN:

But I can't find any source for what it was inspired for, I expected the usual Kusoge from Compile Hearts/Idea Factory, but the best I found was School Days and Yu No having absolutely insane choice systems and dead ends with flags that can apperantly fail. I played the latter's remake and it was pretty bad even without bugs.

School Days route map looks absolutely ridiculous, and probably the reason it wasn't meme-ified was the anime adaption.

This might just be because I play on a shitty laptop but I would crash fairly frequently back when I was playing Koichoco and Aokana, it’s even happened to me a few times playing Nukitashi. But for the most part it’s really hard to make a broken VN.

Most VNs from the 2000s are run on extremely archaeic engines or require a bunch of niche, proprietary windows libraries to run. It's the reason why reading VNs on Linux is such a crapshoot unless you're willing to niggarig Wine in such a way to get them to kind of run sort of. Even on Windows you have to do a lot of bullshit (change locale or use Locale Engine) to get them to run without insta-crashing. You'd think this shit would be simple but no I don't think Japs could into PC Programs like that back in the day.

Sumaga is kind of notorious for being a nightmare to work with engine-wise, to the point where the individual characters themselves complain about how scuffed the engine is in the closing game credits. It's one of many reasons the game hasn't gotten it's full official English release.

Finished Danganronpa V3, and therefore all mainline dr content.

v3
Might as well start with the end. Is there any point in even talking about it? I feel like everything there is to say has probably been said. On one hand, if there is a fanbase out there that deserved an ending like this, its probably this one. On the other though, the creator going ‘actually it was youuuuu that made me make these games bish’ is pretty retarded. I liked chapter 6 up until the second half of the trial, where the entire fucking plot is thrown straight into the garbage so the writer can seethe at the players for like 4 fucking hours even though he is the one that keeps churning it out. The final trial just goes on and on and on, circling the same points a million times. I don’t really care what is real or not in the end, all I know is its all ultimate real bullshit. I actually don’t hate the idea of this sort of meta ending out of pocket, Yoko Taro could probably pull this off, and its probably the only real way to end danganronpa. Maybe its possible to replay the game and determine which things are true or not, but I’m not doing a second play through of this game for a very long time. Talking about this game just feels pointless because everything is fake and gay. Anything you would want to try to analyze or discuss is easily dismissed with ‘it was a prank bro, none of it mattered’. That’s not what the game says, but I disagree. Either the ending is a commentary on the audience of the franchise, in which case it sucks. Or even worse, the in game outside world audience isn’t meant to be a reflection of the real world audience, in which case this whole game was a complete waste of time critiquing something that has no bearing on reality. We’ll never have the technology to recreate the danganronpa tv show as portrayed in v3 because it once again relies on brainwash tech, so who gives a fuck. Why even bother with all that shit when you could just use actors? Like there wouldn’t be an endless supply of newcomers that would want to get their big acting break on a huge franchise? There’s probably some counterargument about how a peaceful society fills its bloodlust or something which is what the game says, but fuck off. I kind of suspected the ending would go the way of being a tv show based on the prologue and how controversial I knew the ending was going in, but it was way beyond what I imagined. This ending feels like it was perfectly designed to appeal to the worst, most insufferable midwits out there that will use it to defend any complaint about the game. What was even the point of making a story where the big idea is 'guise, can you believe fiction can affect the real world? Its true' Uh, yeah, I can believe it. Actually, I think nearly everyone that has ever lived on this planet has believed it.

The funniest thing about all of it though is that they can never continue the franchise without any new installments living under the shadow of V3’s ending, Any games taking place before v3 are pointless, v4 or later completely throws v3 entirely out the window. Even that might wrap back around to proving the antagonist of v3 right. No matter what they do, 2x2 is literally the only thing they can release without the new game being completely overshadowed by how it fits into the 'muh themes’ of v3, which I just find so funny. They tried to break all the toys and go home, and there is no way to ever fully undo it, no matter how many new games they release to try to sweep v3 under the rug.

The gameplay was the best in the series. They fixed the awful sword minigame, unfucked the hangaman minigame after 2 ruined it, lying was way better than absorb, debates were interesting. Psyche taxi took too long to play for how simple it was, but at least it was more stylish than logic dive I guess. Too bad its all wasted on this game.

My favorite character was Miu. I could fix her, but apparently she’s fake and gay along with everything else in this total waste of time so I guess I actually I wouldn’t be able to. I liked this game for the most part until I got to the end. The ending didn’t even make me that mad, I’m just left with a deflated ‘whatever I guess’. What a waste of 30 hours.

series thoughts
My 2 big concerns after the first game were the extent to which the amnesia tech would be abused and how much the mystery surrounding the state of the outside world would be ruined. The latter was totally destroyed, but UDG at least did something interesting with it. The former, holy hack writer batman. It just kept getting more and more obscene every installment, to the point where we had hentai mobile phone hypnosis apps, chum bucket helmets, and a fucking Viktor glorious evolution with the hope video. It just all got way too ridiculous and shark jumpy, (which v3 was supposed to parody I guess?) and the fact that literal mind control tech was so prevalent makes me wonder how society was ever supposed to get back to normal with that kind of genie out of the bag. I don’t have much interest in the manga/novels at this point, because most of the mainline stuff frustrated me too much to want to go to that next layer. 1 was the best by a margin, just a well done game even though I think the amnesia stuff could have been axed and/or rewritten. 2 I have probably the most thoughts on. I liked it, but I think it could have been so much more. UDG was a good first outing for trying to expand the franchise into new areas, it is a shame we probably won’t get more like this, and I have to wonder if this game’s failure to launch was part of what lead to v3. 3 was no joke, one of the worst fucking shows I’ve ever watched. Mostly boring and not interesting to look at. The whole story of the franchise was ruined by mind control tech. V3 is pretty good whenever its NOT hinting at the big twist AND is before trial 6 part 2. I think on a moment to moment basis I actually like it more than 2, but the ending is just so obnoxious and game warping that there is no possible way I would play it again over 2. There is also the issue of having to subject myself to kokichi again, which I am just not willing to do. Togami was fine as an antagonist in the group, but the jokers after him just got worse and worse.

2 I think is probably the worst, or maybe most frustrating, of the main 3 games because there is just so much missed potential. 2 could have been great, but too much of the stuff that was in the despair arc should have just been in the game. Then again, that would pose problems. How am I supposed to believe Hajime would glorious evolution himself when there was supposedly a somewhat autistic (enough to make her cute, and not say, a Tomoko) gamer girl interested in him? I know the beach scene happens in the new world simulation after he’s been Izuru’d, but imagine having a girl that looks like that be into you and you go ‘nah, I need to fucking erase my entire identity so I can be one of the cool kids’. Huh? 2 I think could have had way more slice of life stuff and been better for it, to the point where I bet the original version of the new world program before monokuma might have been a better story, but then you can’t sell it as danganronpa if you don’t have trials.

The fact that the story includes a literal reset button, but does not do ANYTHING with multiple cycles of the program is criminal. It could have been really interesting to do something like put each trial in a different cycle of the new world therapy. Imagine the absolute shock you would get going into chapter 2 and the killer/victims have changed and no one comments on it and discusses a trial you didn’t play. They could relate it to Izuru resurfacing, which is affecting Hajime’s mental state. Maybe the Junko-ai is able to get deeper into the system with each pass or something so the story could still end up in the same place by trial 6. The part where it starts to go off the rails before you get into the school shows there was potential for this kind of stuff, but they do next to nothing with it. It would also be a good way to give characters who die early a way to get some screen time. I’m just spitballing here because I’m annoyed at how little the simulation stuff is used and its a massive problem that Kamakura doesn’t appear for the entire game until the last trial, because its the entire point of the story. I don’t like the massive exposition dump in 2 at the end because it rushes out basically the entire plot at once.

Another thing I forgot to mention about 2 that bothered me was trial 2-2. I thought for sure that Sonia was the killer the whole time because she was wearing a wetsuit instead of a bikini like all the other girls. I thought for sure she killed Mahiru, and then because the shower was out of order, put on a wetsuit clearly sourced from the beach house closet as a way to cover up blood or evidence of washing up, while playing the silly foreigner card to cover it all up. The fact nobody who was at the diner floats this idea annoyed me, it seemed like an obvious thing to try to get to the bottom of.

My favorite trial was 1-4, least was 2-3.

Now, if I never hear the words 絶望 or フィクション ever again, it will still be too soon.

What a mixed bag this series was.

Anyway, 1>>UDG>2>>>V3>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>3

Character tierlist for fun. Based solely on 1,2, v3, no udg or 3. Each tier is ordered from best to worst.
