I saw alot of people soying over the skyward sword soundtrack. Played the whole thing, didnt have the magic or soul of older zelda games. everything sounded generic to me. there isnt a single tune I can recall from that game and I finished it just yesterday.
Back in 2011 if there wasn't a French horn in it, your game got delayed. It was too loud and too "cinematic". It wasn't thrilling, wasn't "epic", had no personality.

Hence, minimalist piano in BotW.

I think, ironically, that stems from the orchestration. Funny I know, but I think everything sortov blends together, like an "action movie score" would. The only theme I remember from skyward sword is the title - which has the benefit of being a reworked Zelda's Lullaby...

The older games, for all their midi crunch - HAD to be memorable to make up for the lesser audio quality. Think about Ocarina, many of the most memorable tracks that everyone knows now, Song of Storms, Gerudo Valley, Lost Woods, Epona's Song, they all used a specific set of notes to be able to be played on the ocarina. They had to ensure each one would stick with you and stand out. With full orchestration... it's like the "pomp" of a Zelda OST finally being orchestrated was supposed to be the big grab, and all the music turned out to be pretty standard orchestral fair. Meanwhile I can remember the HF night theme from TP due to its melancholy and literal usage of Malon's voice as a witty callback to Ocarina.
