Uzumaki - Could this be the first good Junji Ito adaptation?

Okay yeah episode 2 was a huge step down, they crammed in too many of the chapters and you can see exactly where they traced over the manga panels. Guess it was too good to be true.

Quote from my anime/manga thread post about my thoughts:
Watching Adult Swim's Uzumaki:
The first episode's animation quality was fantastic. The intricate rotoscoped detail really shines. Unfortunately since it's only four episodes it seems like it's trying to cram too much in too short of time, which makes the spooky reveals a lot lamer when not given enough buildup.
Second episode. The animation quality absolutely tanked. There's no more rotoscoping, it looks like a normal anime now (which wouldn't bother me usually) but the difference is so stark since there's so many still shots and static conversations. This also makes any scary scenes fall flat as well, Seems like all the money was blown on the first episode.
Unfortunately I don't even know if I want to watch it anymore since the only thing still going for it is the Colin Stetson music. Really sucks too because it could've finally been a good Junji Ito adaptation if it only covered 1 story an episode and kept the animation quality.

You guys weren't kidding, the animation is a huge downgrade from the first episode. It looks like complete and total shit. From the art itself, to the walk, running, and fighting animation, it's all bad. Kirie doesn't even look the same in this episode. And some of the animation legit looked worse than a hastily made old school flash animation made by a bored teenager. That scene where the runaway couple and Kirie were running away from the parents at the train station looked absolutely ridiculous. The light house scene also looked stupid as hell.

Don't even get me started on the actual story line. They tried to cram in so much that you'll be confused unless you already read the manga.

No wonder they kept pushing the release date further and further back, they probably spent most of that time trying to salvage this episode, and it still looks bad.

Here's some screenshots, though still images really don't do it justice. Things look way worse in motion.

That was one of the worst scenes. The running is terrible and look at how Kirie is drawn at the end, she looks like a literal hunch back.
Some terrible dubbing, it sounds something like that "Breaking Bad dubbed over by anime dub VAs" clip only it's not meant to be a joke.

I don't bother watching the dubs, the Japanese voice actors are much better imo.

What the fuck happened. The first episode was pretty good, then this shit came out.
They literally had a different animation studio do this episode

That and a problem with this adaptation is whoever up top decided it would be a good idea to just give 4 episodes.

Hopefully the next two improve, but I'm not optimistic. At least this show made me read the manga

It's only getting 4 episodes? They're going to cram so much shit into that last episode that it's going to be fucking nonsense.

Big if true, but definitely wouldn't be surprised if that's real. The Covid pandemic really and truly fucked studios over, and no amount of funding would've fixed it especially if they're using multiple techniques that are demanding on newbie animators (it really does sound like they were going the Paperman route, and Lord knows Disney dropped that idea like a rock when they saw the price tag after the second short was finished).

What a disaster lol.

You could freeze frame the whole episode and find mindboggling shit.

Her thumbs have weird sizes, the scissors look small, her hair doesn't have the silky texture it had a few seconds ago, I could go on.

Edit:

“The pandemic completely stopped production on the show for close to a year. It was the single biggest impact,” says Jason DeMarco, the show’s executive producer and Adult Swim’s SVP of anime and action series. “Our crew was small, so having even a few members and their families getting deathly ill was a huge blow to both the production and our morale. It was very challenging to bring the show back from the dead.”

Is it safe to assume the pandemic had nothing to do with the production halt?

It seems more like Prodcution I.G were acting like a bunch of assholes.

Production I.G. has always been a total shitshow. It is kinda staggering they are still in business.
