A skill shortage really isnt the problem we are facing here. The few industries that aren't completely compromised at this point will take on people, pay for technical school for them, and make sure they learn what is needed to have workers that will do the jobs we need done. Usually these are ones like refinery work, (in certain areas, some you will need to actually get a degree on your own, engineering for instance), and they actually pay a livable wage.Admittedly, I don't know enough about how pensions work to talk about that.
What areas are there skill shortages in? I remember people pushing STEM, but that ended up being hogwash, and now even Accounting is being flooded by Indians. FIRE sector is a decent bet, but fuck the insurance industry.
The kinds of jobs that tend to get completely filled up with illegal migrant workers could definitely be done by the average person fairly easily. But the companies are incetivized to pay slave wages because they can get away with it.
A large migrant workforce puts the labor market in the buyers favor (meaning the company that is "buying" your labor), the wage they are willing to pay depends on what the supply is vs demand. A huge influx of immigrants increases the supply, while the demand remains the same. The talking points about a "skill shortage" are literally just bullshit propaganda talking points to keep people from seeing it for what it is.
