WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden took a swipe against Donald Trump’s supporters on Tuesday as he reacted to the Republican presidential nominee’s weekend rally at Madison Square Garden, which was overshadowed by crude and racist rhetoric.
In a call organized by the Hispanic advocacy group Voto Latino, Biden responded to a comic at Trump’s rally who called Puerto Rico a “floating island of garbage.” Biden’s initial comments were garbled.
“Just the other day, a speaker at his rally called Puerto Rico a floating island of garbage. Well, let me tell you something, I don’t, I don’t know the Puerto Rican that I know, the Puerto Rico where I’m fr -- in my home state of Delaware. They’re good, decent honorable people,” he said.
The president then added: “The only garbage I see floating out there is his supporters. His demonization of Latinos is unconscionable, and it’s un-American. It’s totally contrary to everything we’ve done, everything we’ve been.”
White House spokesman Andrew Bates said Biden “referred to the hateful rhetoric at the Madison Square Garden rally as ‘garbage.’”
Biden then took to social media to personally clarify what he said.
“Earlier today I referred to the hateful rhetoric about Puerto Rico spewed by Trump’s supporter at his Madison Square Garden rally as garbage — which is the only word I can think of to describe it,” he posted on X. “His demonization of Latinos is unconscionable. That’s all I meant to say. The comments at that rally don’t reflect who we are as a nation.”
In referring to Trump’s supporters as “garbage,” however, Biden’s tone was at odds with the message that Democratic nominee Kamala Harris is seeking to present as she aims to cast a broad appeal, including to disaffected Republicans. Shortly after Biden’s comments, Harris spoke from the Ellipse in Washington, vowing to be a president who would unite the country.
“I pledge to be a president for all Americans,” said Harris, who is Biden’s vice president.
Republicans quickly highlighted Biden’s remark. Trump called up Florida Sen. Marco Rubio during his rally in Allentown, Pennsylvania, to recount what happened.
“Moments ago Joe Biden stated that our supporters, our patriots, are garbage,” Rubio said. ”He’s talking about everyday Americans who love their country.”
Trump campaign spokesperson Karoline Leavitt said in a subsequent statement, “There’s no way to spin it: Joe Biden and Kamala Harris don’t just hate President Trump, they despise the tens of millions of Americans who support him.”
A Trump campaign fundraising text declared, “KAMALA’S BOSS JOE BIDEN JUST CALLED ALL MY SUPPORTERS GARBAGE!” before ensuring recipients that Trump himself thinks, “YOU ARE AMAZING!”
Even some prominent Democrats began distancing themselves from Biden’s comments. Speaking on CNN, Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro said he would “never insult the good people of Pennsylvania or any Americans even if they chose to support a candidate that I didn’t support.”
The comments recalled then-Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton dismissing Trump supporters during a 2016 fundraiser in New York by saying that half would fit into a “ basket of deplorables.”
Clinton later called that characterization “grossly generalistic.” But it became a defiant rallying cry for many Trump backers who said the insult encapsulated the elitist attitudes of Clinton and the Democrats.
As reactions to Biden’s reaction began to fly, meanwhile, Trump was asked in an interview Tuesday night with Fox News Channel’s Sean Hannity about the racist and vulgar joke at his New York rally. He responded: “Somebody said there was a comedian that joked about Puerto Rico or something. And I have no idea who he is.”
The former president added, “I can’t imagine it’s a big deal.”
At a rally Tuesday in Allentown, Pennsylvania, a city with a large Hispanic population, Trump repeated his claim that Biden’s immigration policies have allowed other countries to treat the U.S. like “a giant garbage can.”
With Election Day now just a week off, Biden has worked to maintain relevance, furiously promoting his administration’s accomplishments while Harris in her race against Trump.
But his efforts to remain in the political spotlight might not always be so helpful for the top of the Democratic ticket he’s now promoting. That’s because, while Harris has been sharply critical of Trump for months, repeatedly calling him “unstable” and “unhinged” and even suggesting that he was “ fascist,” she has been careful not to decry his supporters.
In fact, the vice president has campaigned extensively with former Republican Rep. Liz Cheney and other former GOP elected officials — hoping to woo conservative crossover voters. The Democratic convention — and Harris ads — have highlighted the stories of everyday Americans who talked about having voted for Trump in the past but now say they are supporting the vice president.
On Tuesday’s call, Biden also said that Trump “doesn’t give a damn about the Latino community” and urged rejection of the former president even as Trump’s campaign says its support is rising among Hispanics, particularly men.

The White House quickly objected to that interpretation of the president’s remarks, arguing that he was instead describing the racist language as “garbage,” not Trump supporters.
The comments came as Mr. Biden was addressing Latino supporters by video. “Just the other day, a speaker at his rally called Puerto Rico a ‘floating island of garbage,’” Mr. Biden said, referring to a riff by Tony Hinchcliffe, a comedian and Trump supporter who spoke at the rally at Madison Square Garden on Sunday.
Mr. Biden said Puerto Ricans are “good, decent honorable people.” Then he went on: “The only garbage I see floating out there is his supporters — his, his demonization of Latinos is unconscionable, and it’s un-American.”
The White House released a transcript that showed Mr. Biden was saying “his supporter’s” demonization, meaning that Mr. Hinchcliffe’s demonization was garbage.
But Republicans seized on the seeming gaffe, comparing it to a comment by Hillary Clinton in 2016 when she referred to Trump supporters as “deplorables.”
Senator JD Vance of Ohio, Mr. Trump’s running mate, said: “This is disgusting. Kamala Harris and her boss Joe Biden are attacking half of the country.” Just one day earlier, Mr. Vance brushed off the Puerto Rico island-of-garbage comment, saying, “We have to stop getting so offended at every little thing in the United States of America.”
Mr. Biden issued a statement on social media trying to clarify.
“Earlier today I referred to the hateful rhetoric about Puerto Rico spewed by Trump’s supporter at his Madison Square Garden rally as garbage — which is the only word I can think of to describe it,” he wrote. “His demonization of Latinos is unconscionable. That’s all I meant to say. The comments at that rally don’t reflect who we are as a nation.”
But regardless of his intent, Mr. Biden’s words sparked backlash against his party and effectively moved the spotlight — at least temporarily — away from Vice President Kamala Harris on the evening in which she delivered the closing argument of her campaign. Ms. Harris has tried to persuade voters that she represents change while being careful not to criticize Mr. Biden.
After Mr. Biden’s remark, Harris campaign officials privately gauged whether his comments would require her to disagree with him publicly or support his explanation that the comments were taken out of context, according to people familiar with the internal reaction. They asked for anonymity to discuss private deliberations.

A single apostrophe — or lack thereof — caused an uproar in the presidential race Tuesday night after President Joe Biden criticized former president Donald Trump during a virtual event and later denied he was referring to Trump’s supporters as “garbage.”
Biden was speaking on an evening call to rally Latino voters when he brought up a Trump rally speaker’s racist insult of Puerto Rico over the weekend.
“Just the other day, a speaker at his rally called Puerto Rico a ‘floating island of garbage,’” Biden said, referring to comedian Tony Hinchcliffe’s comment at Trump’s rally Sunday in New York.
The president, as he has recently been prone to do, then stumbled over his words as he sought to suggest that Hinchcliffe’s characterization is not how he would describe the Puerto Ricans he knows.
“They’re good, decent, honorable people. The only garbage I see floating out there is his supporters. His — his — his demonization of Latinos is unconscionable, and it’s un-American,” Biden said, according to an audio recording from a Washington Post reporter who listened in on the call.
Asked for comment, a White House spokesperson, Andrew Bates, said in a statement, “The President referred to the hateful rhetoric at the Madison Square Garden rally as garbage.”
The White House initially provided a transcript of Biden’s remarks that purported to show him saying “supporters’ ” — a plural possessive. A few hours later, the White House distributed a new transcript that used “supporter’s” — a singular possessive word that apparently refers to the comedian alone.
The change came after White House staff talked to the president, who conveyed that he meant to say the comedian’s language “was garbage,” according to a person familiar with the situation, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss internal dynamics.
In the meantime, Trump’s campaign seized on the moment, saying in an email: “Kamala Harris’ governing partner just insulted tens of millions of Americans. Will Kamala apologize and disavow Joe Biden’s remarks?”
By 9:31 p.m., Biden himself sought to clear up the situation.
“Earlier today I referred to the hateful rhetoric about Puerto Rico spewed by Trump’s supporter at his Madison Square Garden rally as garbage — which is the only word I can think of to describe it,” Biden said on X. “His demonization of Latinos is unconscionable. That’s all I meant to say. The comments at that rally don’t reflect who we are as a nation.”
As for Biden, the president has a record of verbal gaffes that have long loomed over his life in public service — and which partly fueled the Democratic anxieties that precipitated his decision to end his reelection campaign this summer.
At the same time, Trump has for years vilified his political opponents with vicious and often offensive attacks, referring to Democrats as “communists,” “fascists,” and “far-left lunatics,” to name just a few of his favored pejoratives. He has spent recent weeks doubling down on his claim that there is an “enemy from within” the country, including specific Democratic officials.
Hinchcliffe’s comments about Puerto Rico and Latinos — and Trump’s harsh rhetoric toward political opponents — have overtaken the final days of the White House contest. Trump and his campaign have sought to distance themselves from Hinchcliffe’s Puerto Rico insult, while the Democratic nominee, Vice President Kamala Harris, has pointed to it as evidence that Trump remains focused on dividing the country.
Biden’s remarks came shortly before Harris was set to deliver her closing argument in a major speech Tuesday night in Washington. Biden was speaking during an early-voting call organized by Voto Latino, a Latino advocacy group that has endorsed Harris.
Asked for comment, a Trump campaign spokesperson pointed to a social media post from top campaign adviser Chris LaCivita, who cited Biden’s comment and said: “Remember … [Harris] hates you and they hate the American spirit vote accordingly.”
It is not the first time Biden has gone off-script while seeking to boost Harris after ending his own campaign. He caused controversy during a trip to New Hampshire last week when he referred to Trump and said, “We’ve got to lock him up.” He quickly added that he meant “politically lock him up.”
During a campaign stop Monday in Wisconsin, Trump’s running mate, Sen. JD Vance, used a vulgarity while referencing Harris supporters who have drawn comparisons between Sunday’s Madison Square Garden rally and a 1939 meeting of Nazi supporters there. Vance argued that U.S. soldiers fighting Nazi Germany would not have supported Harris’s platform.
“If you think those brave men were fighting for an open border and sex-change surgeries for illegal aliens,” Vance said, “the proper term for you is ‘dips---.’”
Vance responded to Biden’s comment on Tuesday night.
“This is disgusting,” Vance said on X. “Kamala Harris and her boss Joe Biden are attacking half of the country. There’s no excuse for this. I hope Americans reject it.”
Democrats were not fully united in defending Biden late Tuesday night.
Asked about Biden’s comments on CNN, Josh Shapiro — the Democratic governor of Pennsylvania, a critical swing state for Harris — did not dispute that Biden had disparaged Trump supporters.
“I had not heard that until now … so I’m kind of giving you my fresh reaction to it,” Shapiro said. “I would never insult the good people of Pennsylvania or any Americans even if they chose to support a candidate that I didn’t support.”

In the meantime, Trump’s campaign seized on the moment, saying in an email: “Kamala Harris’ governing partner just insulted tens of millions of Americans. Will Kamala apologize and disavow Joe Biden’s remarks?”
By 9:31 p.m., Biden himself sought to clear up the situation.
“Earlier today I referred to the hateful rhetoric about Puerto Rico spewed by Trump’s supporter at his Madison Square Garden rally as garbage — which is the only word I can think of to describe it,” Biden said on X. “His demonization of Latinos is unconscionable. That’s all I meant to say. The comments at that rally don’t reflect who we are as a nation.”
As for Biden, the president has a record of verbal gaffes that have long loomed over his life in public service — and which partly fueled the Democratic anxieties that precipitated his decision to end his reelection campaign this summer.
At the same time, Trump has for years vilified his political opponents with vicious and often offensive attacks, referring to Democrats as “communists,” “fascists,” and “far-left lunatics,” to name just a few of his favored pejoratives. He has spent recent weeks doubling down on his claim that there is an “enemy from within” the country, including specific Democratic officials.
Hinchcliffe’s comments about Puerto Rico and Latinos — and Trump’s harsh rhetoric toward political opponents — have overtaken the final days of the White House contest. Trump and his campaign have sought to distance themselves from Hinchcliffe’s Puerto Rico insult, while the Democratic nominee, Vice President Kamala Harris, has pointed to it as evidence that Trump remains focused on dividing the country.
Biden’s remarks came shortly before Harris was set to deliver her closing argument in a major speech Tuesday night in Washington. Biden was speaking during an early-voting call organized by Voto Latino, a Latino advocacy group that has endorsed Harris.
Asked for comment, a Trump campaign spokesperson pointed to a social media post from top campaign adviser Chris LaCivita, who cited Biden’s comment and said: “Remember … [Harris] hates you and they hate the American spirit vote accordingly.”
It is not the first time Biden has gone off-script while seeking to boost Harris after ending his own campaign. He caused controversy during a trip to New Hampshire last week when he referred to Trump and said, “We’ve got to lock him up.” He quickly added that he meant “politically lock him up.”
During a campaign stop Monday in Wisconsin, Trump’s running mate, Sen. JD Vance, used a vulgarity while referencing Harris supporters who have drawn comparisons between Sunday’s Madison Square Garden rally and a 1939 meeting of Nazi supporters there. Vance argued that U.S. soldiers fighting Nazi Germany would not have supported Harris’s platform.
“If you think those brave men were fighting for an open border and sex-change surgeries for illegal aliens,” Vance said, “the proper term for you is ‘dips---.’”
Vance responded to Biden’s comment on Tuesday night.
“This is disgusting,” Vance said on X. “Kamala Harris and her boss Joe Biden are attacking half of the country. There’s no excuse for this. I hope Americans reject it.”
Democrats were not fully united in defending Biden late Tuesday night.
Asked about Biden’s comments on CNN, Josh Shapiro — the Democratic governor of Pennsylvania, a critical swing state for Harris — did not dispute that Biden had disparaged Trump supporters.
“I had not heard that until now … so I’m kind of giving you my fresh reaction to it,” Shapiro said. “I would never insult the good people of Pennsylvania or any Americans even if they chose to support a candidate that I didn’t support.”

Even if Biden didn't say that I don't think her speech would be trending. Kamala's speeches and interviews have been so cookie cutter and devoid of substance that if you seen one you seen them all, so I doubt people would be actively tuning in even if she had something special to say.
