As many have already recommended, Glock is a sturdy, reliable choice with plenty of sizing/caliber options. My rec in your case would be a Beretta 92 (92X, if you want to be able to put a light on it). The HK VP9 has a great trigger, and you can change the grip panels to your liking. Since it sounds like you’re not in a state that has magazine capacity restrictions, both of those are fine choices and worth the extra bulkiness. Both have rails and are RMR-capable, if you want to eventually go down that path.
We can make all the recommendations in the world, but ultimately, the only person who can make this decision is you. You’re going to have to decide what best fits your needs, hand, carry style, budget, etc. If possible, see if you can go to the range with a professional and try out some options yourself before you buy. Get some professional guidance, do your research, and have fun!

I wouldn't say George Wallace was a fringe candidate. Far from it. Although being a lifelong Democrat, he is the last person to win any electoral votes as a third-party candidate (in 1968 as the nominee of the American Independent Party). Not even Ross Perot and his Reform Party could accomplish that feat, despite being on the presidential debate stage with Bush 41 and Bill Clinton.

No, all the stuff they're currently saying about him is the same stuff they've been saying since 2015 which is why it's so maddening.
