He's established but unknown enough that there isn't a portfolio of attack ads against him. He doesn't like Trump but has been largely neutral and objective, at least as much as any Republican. He's the La Croix of VP candidates, and that's for the best.

JD Vance is a solid populist pick. The dude has also been one of the fiercest advocates for Appalachia and the "Forgotten Working Class" for several decades now. He definitely is cut from the same cloth as Jim Webb if anyone remembers that guy. Probably the kind of guy who would have been a Union Democrat 40 years ago if we are being honest.
He also gets Trump the favored son bump in Ohio and to a lesser extent Pennsylvania, which are both critical for the coming election.

I think Vance is definitely far from the worst choice. A long political career ahead of him, with populism here to stay means that he knows if he doesn't play this right, his career is over before he turns 45. Trump could have picked WAY worse.

If Trump is also able to get RFK to drop out, and endorse Trump (with a secretary position), that really seals the deal. That's what a unity ticket looks like, the democrats can't react and will probably do a crazy Paul Wellstone memorial cult chant like in '02.

It's interesting how "convicted felon" is now a core part of the NPC lingo. They don't say criminal, because every politician is obviously a criminal to some extent. But Trump got convicted by the other criminals, so that makes him worse somehow.
