Initially, I just thought back to how we evolved as extremely simple lifeforms that coalesced and began to work in concert to eventually produce the once-simple-and-growingly-complex neural networks that allowed the transformation into what we became today. The slopbots just reinforced my certainty in my own contrived argument, as is their wont. I viewed-- and still do, to an extent-- LLMs as an intermediate step in the process.
However, I suspect we agree more than we disagree. Your core assertion seems to be that fundamental adjustments to the architecture are necessary to change the nature of an LLM into something more condusive to "intelligence", and I agree with that. I took your argument to be that they are irrelevant towards the eventual shape of what AI will look like, and with that I disagree. If that WAS what you were saying, then shit. I guess we're enemies for life!
A DNN is basically the world's greatest curve-fitting engine (if you're a math person, technically a "manifold", but who cares about nerd babble), requiring virtually no knowledge about the space you're trying to fit ahead of time in order to find a good fit. That makes it really good at certain things. In particular, it's very good at fitting to patterns in data you weren't looking for. But anything that curve fitting is fundamentally incapable of doing, DNNs are fundamentally incapable of doing.
For example, take a swinging pendulum. You can sample as many points in space and time as you like to track its motion, then train a DNN on the pairs (t, θ). How many parameters do you need? A thousand? A million? A billion? A trillion? It doesn't matter, your DNN will fail to predict θ for any t outside your training set.
You can't train your way to this equation:
This equation comes from a model of the universe. It's a simple model - Newtonian physics - but this model wasn't arrived at by fitting a curve to points. It was arrived by Isaac Newton observing patterns and then reasoning about them to principles. These principles, which can be written down in a few sentences, are then an interpretive matrix for the world from which all pre-Einstein physics can be derived. DNNs don't do that. DNNs ingest data and fit curves. They do not reason about the data they ingest to arrive at principles, and then deduce conclusions from principles. This isn't something you can change about DNNs; it's just how DNNs work.
An actual intelligence will read one argument for God existing, and another argument for God not existing, and make a decision about which argument he finds persuasive. His belief about whether there is a God then informs his model of the world, his understanding of how things work. This will then affect his morality, his plans, and his decisions. A DNN will simply ingest both tests, assign model weights based on the word patterns, and be able spit back word-patterns that resemble the ingested patterns, totally oblivious to the concept of "contradiction." The DNN will not "believe" anything about God. It will deduce nothing. It will arrive at no conclusions. It won't experience cognitive dissonance because it doesn't cogitate.
No amount of scaling will fix the problem. You can't hook DNNs together to fix the problem. They can sort of pantomime reasoning for a bit, and clever use of context windows can almost make it seem like they learn and remember, but the illusion falls apart under scrutiny. The problem isn't the technique; it's at the core of the technology, like trying to make a prop plane that flies to the moon.
