ah see, but they did. you'll not find a vending machine one that won't take a dollar coin. the treasury worked with the industry (who spent many millions refitting machines) on the program. it was all set to go off perfectly. the vending machines, toll booths etc were all ready to go, the treasury pre-stocked government facilities, banks and post offices with dollar coins and made the coins available to citizens via the mint website at cost. no shipping or fees. all congress had to do was authorize the treasury to withdraw the dollar, but concerned citizens spurred on by lobbyists flooding capitol hill with letters and emails and phone calls and that killed it.
Those look surprisingly modern.

The Edwardian era was the beginning of the industrial revolution, we picture it as long ago but really they had what most of us consider to be daily life. Electricity was commonplace, clothing for suits is still the same style etc. From a clothing and culture standpoint it's a very interesting era.

To avoid powerlevelling too much, I had what essentially turned out to be a do-nothing overnight contract at one of these AI Data Centers as a recent job following a layoff/restructure/dogshit small business planning event at a prior job, and the money and do-nothing was nice... for about two weeks. The most I ever did for 4 months before myself and a few hundred other people (some who moved halfway across the country, mind you) was vacuum these football field sized server rooms and MAYBE troubleshoot a 15 foot fiber optic line once a week. The money for overnight was really nice to have, but it fucked me up for even a good month or two following the mass layoff. That, and the contractor company blew a lot of smoke up our asses about duties and job openings. Funnily enough, I think the Jeet contractors somehow made it through both rounds of layoffs, if you can believe it.

The last oil lamps were really, really good too. I have an Aladdin table lamp (designed around 1905-1910) that, by itself, can light my entire living room as well as the electric light in the ceiling. it produces bright white light very comparable to LED lighting at it's highest setting. It uses a mantle like a coleman pressure lantern but with regular kerosene lamp fuel.
