Walmart was started in Arkansas and spread throughout that region which is almost completely right leaning. Lots of farmers and working class which is why it has that reputation.

Sam's Club was just a straight knock-off of Costco. Costco was a knock-off of Price Club which was the original wholesale warehouse concept. Price Club started out as actual wholesale where you actually had to own a business to get a membership. Eventually Costco and Price Club merged and Costco phased out the Price Club brand.
