The US wasn't going to invade China, so the choices were either a defensive strategy in South Vietnam or a defensive strategy in North Vietnam. In a sense, North Vietnam was used as a kind of buffer against Chinese involvement. The last time the US and China fought, the US over 30,000 White men were killed while achieving nothing (China had 110,000 KIA).

To clarify what I am talking about: Landlord has house, plus income properties A, B, & C. Landlord forms 3 LLCs, to each hold one income property. LLCs A, B, & C are all separate entities with separate liability, provided that the formalities are followed. A judgement against property A is limited to the assets contained within property A, and cannot reach B, C, or the personal home. The fact that the LLCs are doing the same type of business with different assets doesn't merge them on its own. None of this somehow protects the personal assets from personal judgments, nor would it protect the parent entity from its own liability in the analogy, but it would protect the parent entity from its subsidiaries' liability, and the subsidiaries from each others' liability. The ownership interests of the landlord/parent entity in the LLCs are potentially attachable through judgments against the landlord/parent, but it doesn't flow the other way.
