I actually did a high school report on aluminium production and the biggest issue with it, and the reason why it's the only metal worth recycling, is because of the resulting waste product known as "red mud". See, we don't actually pull pure aluminium out of the ground; what gets dug up is something called bauxite which goes through something called the Bayer process. I'll spare the details, but the end result is it produces aluminium oxide... and a heavily caustic slurry known as red mud. This stuff has zero practical use and the only way we know how to deal with it is to dry it out in massive, shallow pools. There have been some attempts at finding uses for it, but they have largely gone nowhere.

I've been interested in aluminum lately, so I'm a little curious. Why can't the chemicals that make up red mud be harvested if you don't mind my asking?
