The fact that you cannot discharge student loans is absolutely fucked.
You can discharge student loans in bankruptcy. That's a common misunderstanding repeated everywhere, including the farms apparently.

The department of education's own website even states as such. The important thing regarding discharge of student loans is that there's a higher bar to clear for their discharge. It's not "automatic" - you have to show an excessive burden from them.

So some idiot who has 300k in debt for an art degree could likely discharge them, but if they were a doctor they'd likely fail to discharge.

Now all that being said - I fully endorse removing the higher bar. Banks should have to actually think carefully before approving student loans, they need real skin in the game.

Personally I’m not against them. But I think you should only be eligible after your first year. I knew about 15-20 people when I was in college that fucked off for two semesters of drinking and partying and of course flunked out. So 20 people wasting a year is 5 full educations that could have been paid for for people who applied themselves. I think you should pay for your first year and get reimbursed after the fact. Then moving forward it’s covered. Also I think it should heavily prioritize STEM. Any liberal arts degree should be heavily scrutinized for eligibility
So, what about people who go to community college first, get their A.A, then go to a university? those tend to not flunk out as much vs someone who goes to a 4 year right off the bat. Also, Pell grants already cover trade schools as well as colleges and universities.

Maybe it's theoretically possible but nobody has ever heard of anyone successfully pulling it off.

Why exactly are we all against pell grants here? Sure, some people end up getting shit degrees in gender studies, but pell grants help out a lot. i'm trying to pay my own way with pell grants, working, and scholarships. A reduction in any of them means I have to rely on the other 2, and hours are hard to come by for my work.
For whatever it's worth, I'm not opposed to Pell Grants.
Not really. With most debts, you can take away whatever that was used as collateral: the house, car, etc. You can’t take the knowledge or the experience away. In that case, it’s perfectly reasonable to be non-dischargeable.
Really? Would you mind spoonfeeding me the Department of Education page regarding bankruptcy for student loans?

it’s perfectly reasonable to be non-dischargeable.
no its not.

what happened is you have some very high paying professions like medicine that basically goose the numbers.

A accountant salary when added to a ceramics majors make an average that is misleading at best and a fraud at worse.

Back to my point, a bunch of doctors were getting medical degrees declairing bankupcy and because of their high pay and profession it was a win win.

So they made the debt risk free for the institution the institution exspanded to fill seats with worthless degrees

In a just world if a person got a degree and was able to work in that field or get a well paying job they should be able to have the debt covered by the institution

Tuition is high because the feds give out so much free money to pay for it. I want all the free money gone, the grants and the subsidized loans. Starve the universities.
It will never happen. NEPO Babies use those loans to start their careers. I personally know quite a few people that did this. Obligatory I am not saying anyone should do this because you can get in trouble for doing certain things with it.

You see, there's no real auditing to student loans. So as long as you maintain the minimum class requirement to be classified as a student, it doesn't really matter what you do with the rest of the money. You can take out loans for a full year, sign up for 1-2 online classes, be classified as a student and start businesses. Its not the best strategy but if you don't want to deal with investors, or are simply a nobody, it's an easy way to get started while accruing some credits.

It will never happen.
A lot of things I want will never happen. Ending subsidized federal loans, shutting down the Federal Reserve, repealing the 17th & 19th amendments, canceling Medicaid, 20 mm autocannons blasting apart migrant caravans on the border, but if there's one thing I learned from school, it's that it's never wrong to dare to DREAM.

If you come into the country for college from wherever, China, India, wherever, do you get access to all the standard grants like Pell or whichever one is free and doesn't have to be paid back?

If we had a grant system that was actually about enabling education instead of handing out free money to niggers (nearly every federal program is actually a racial spoils program tarted up with high-minded language), you would have to pay back your grant if you flunked out of school.

The fact that you cannot discharge student loans is absolutely fucked.

You used to be able to, but so many students were doing it that it was bankrupting the program. That's why they're no longer dischargeable. Student loans are incredibly stupid from the creditor's POV, because they:
  • Require no collateral
  • Don't test for creditworthiness
  • Don't require payments for years
  • Do not try to assess the value of the thing purchased with the loan
So yeah, of course a ton of them are loaned out to garbage borrowers for garbage reasons. They're the most garbage loans in the world. The program should be shut down or radically reformed, but that's about as likely as my border autocannons.
