It would be an even bigger trick for Clinton to have anything to do with said dad, Hafez al-Assad, who had been in power since 1970 after toppling his own partner Salah Jadid in a (non-Clinton-assisted, obviously, as Bill hadn't graduated from Yale in that year) coup and met Clinton exactly once (in 2000, shortly before his own death - he didn't like doing foreign trips).
