There's a strong national security interest in keeping subsidies for farmers to create an over-abundance of food, even at a pace that is currently wasteful, as we're only one chink or one really bad season away from losing a significant amount of food and sending prices of staples soaring or in the worst case creating food insecurity, and it'd only be exacerbated in wartime as crop production is a very serious attack vector in case shit ever truly hits the fan. 'Muh maga socialist subsidies' has always been a shitty gotcha as it's usually made by people in decadence who have no idea what it means to lose their high fructose corn goyslop hose. It's not a perfect system but it's a very safe one, and it's certainly better at solving potential issues of worst case scenarios than the faggots who just want to see everything in the country burn down.
