It tends to tone down in both directions. Finding a good woman can be quite "regulating" and "calming" for the average man, prompting him to cut back on the edginess and pursue more ties to community (to lay foundations for building a family). Conversely, said "good woman" (if she'a actually an adequate wife and partner to her husband, and actually respects his position as head-of-household) will quietly adjust her own political (and religious) beliefs to more comfortably align with his.
That's not to say an atheist can just casually stroll into a Catholic church for a few weeks, "play the part," score himself a good traditional Christian woman, wife her up and she'll immediately renounce the church and go full soy for him, though. More likely than not said atheist will realize there's more good than harm in staying engaged with the church and will do so (not just for his wife's benefit), but conversely she won't spend their lives together nagging him to go full hardcore fundamentalist either. Will he convert? No. Will he still be a potentially valuable member of the church and its community? More likely than he thinks.
Having attended several church services on a few occasions (for friends' benefit, etc.), I can tell you they fucking know you're not a believer the moment you walk in, too. That doesn't make them hostile or unwelcoming or anything (quite the contrary -- they see you as someone to be saved, not turned away), but they peg you dead-to-rights at first contact. You're not just going to stroll in, "poach" a pretty girl from them and run away with her. They sniff that shit out instantly.
