Renewables like solar and wind are the next best alternative.

They're not, though. Neither of them are net-positive -- they consume resources in construction, assembly, installation and maintenance worth more than the value of the energy they can produce before they fail at the end of their lifespan.

They're only cost-effective for private residences when there are tax incentives or government rebates to reduce the total cost. Otherwise, same problem -- they fail before they earn their cost back.

Solar panels just aren't efficient enough yet to make them worth using. From my understanding wind turbines have gone about as far as they can go -- there's only so much wind and turbines can only spin so fast before Physics™ notices your bullshit and starts enforcing its rules (to comedic effect).
