Unpopular Opinions about Video Games

the dude implemented actual coding for a hacking minigame
fucking madman
Not really excited by that, i'm excited by the fact that there's now a date-time widget on the HUD, meaning we'll get day-night schedules

The new inventory looks sick too, you can see your character equipped gear just like in Quasimorph (also a great game)

I don't like games where teams are color coded. I see "red," I think "enemy." If I'm red team, I'll get confused seeing blue.
just turn on the simple color modes where you get to pick between always blue or red for the team you are in.
or colorblind mode, unless you are playing indieslop, since they rarely have accessibility options.

It’s basically impossible to design a game that caters to every single possible build while having each class feel mechanically distinct.
You can't design for every possible combination of things, but you can absolutely make sure the things you put in a game are useful in straightforward builds. Like if you've got five skills, then you should make sure every point in the game can be passed a different way depending on what skill the player prioritized. Deus Ex did a pretty good job with this.

Swimming is basically a meme, by your logic that makes deus ex a bad game.

Mario Galaxy 1 > Mario Galaxy 2
Much like Tears of the Kingdom, Galaxy 2 was basically a DLC sold for full price. It also relies much more heavily on nostalgia bait than 1.

Not really, no. Another tell that a game is bad is its defenders will pretend not to understand things or resort to silly arguments.

Deus Ex has one skill of questionable utility, and it's not a trap option. You're not going to break your build because you thought leveling it up was a good idea. It's mathematically impossible to put a significant fraction of your skill points into it. The game does not trick you into thinking it's a good skill with early level design and then rugpull you midgame by presenting you with a challenge that is borderline impossible to progress if you put points in Swimming.

???, neither is that the case in SS2. Even if you go full retard and only invest in cybernetic affinity, research and repair and pick garbage O/S upgrades with zero synergy with your build you can still probably beat the game but you’re going to whack SHODAN’s shield with a wrench for a while.

But at that point you’re either completely retarded to not pick up any weapons skills whatsoever or are actively trying to prove a point.

if only games thought of making the game viable for multiple "doomed" builds...
no, wait, fags would complain the game is inconsequential and building a class is pointless, nevermind...
if only system shock 2 included the research boost mod and ice picks which are a consumable that can hack things which can be used to bypass the game's only 2 mandatory skill checks...

The reality is you dont want to think and that's what a good game does, it makes you think. If its mindless its not engaging and therefore its boring. This kind of thing is an immediate tell for when someone's opinion just doesn't matter.

Its like when someone says they don't like DOOM eternal because its a rare case where you have a game that has the skill ceiling and depth rivaling a truly good hardcore game like bayonetta or ninja gaiden but its an ip thats popular so casual players played it. So when you hear them go "its asks too much of me" its just an immediate tell theyre just the normal retards who play cod, halo, battlefield and nothing else then they get filtered by a game that has actual game design.

Tempest 2000 keeps getting brought up, which i spose gets me to say my unpopular opinion in that it sucked compared to the original. What makes the original Tempest work were its graphics and the controls. 2000 fails on the controls and simply could not replicate its graphics (not its fault but still a downgrade regardless)
Well I finally tried Digital Eclipse's Atari 50 collection and put some time into Tempest 2000 and, uh, it's better than Trevor McFur at least. Controls stiffly, graphics are illegible, easy and repetitive, doesn't even seem playable for score because of how continues work. Apparently there's a unlockable hard mode that slows your own shots down. I didn't get that far but it sounds like an amazingly terrible idea. The Atari 50 version has an option to support analog controls but I can't even tell the difference, whereas the original Tempest actually works ok with a thumbstick and even looks a lot better on a modern monitor imo.

As for the rest of the collection, wow, Atari really fell off after the early 80s huh? Yeah, I already knew that, but to see it laid out in all the gory detail... if the Jaguar and Lynx were released into a market with no competitors, it would've caused another crash.

On a related note: Digital Eclipse are frauds and their retro game collections suck hard. Journos and user reviews ignore the lag/bugs/etc because the IPs activate their memberberry childhood nostalgia feels, and they're casual filth who don't play the games anyway. Atari 50 kind of gets a pass because the documentary material is so interesting, and you know going in that most of the games are only playable out of morbid curiosity anyway. Now, a lot of people will tell you that Atari 2600 games sucked because of the primitive hardware, and there is some underlying truth to that, but go in with an open mind and I believe you'll find that many of Atari's games for more advanced hardware in the 1990s were even more shitty.

Typical Digital Eclipse moment: they included a remake of Yars' Revenge that is apparently the original reskinned with fancy new graphics. It does look very nice and that's an idea I can get behind... but they forgot to implement the difficulty settings from the original, so you're stuck on the default. According to the original manual: "this is the simplest version, a good choice for young children to play" (note: this is by early 80s standards, i.e. it's harder than Dark Souls). For other devs, this would be an embarrassing oversight to be fixed in a patch, but this thing has been out for years, so I guess for them it's not worth the 0.5 billable hours to fix, even though this is an actively-supported product that they are still dropping DLC for.

neither is that the case in SS2
100% of SS2 apologia revolves around which skills and gear you should not pick so that you don't get screwed. Don't pick this weapon, don't pick that skill, oh you can't really get past this part in level 8 if you make this choice at level 3, etc. If that's how you talk about your game, it's a bad game. Deus Ex, you can just sit down and play it and make decisions that seem like a good idea, and you'll be fine, you'll have fun. The first level sucks, and anybody who says it doesn't is nuts, but overall, the game is pretty good. SS2? All I ever hear is what a pain in the ass the game is to play if you don't look up the meta online.

And tbh, my go-to for a piece of shit broken-by-design game is Diablo II.

Digital Eclipse being champions at fumbling is why I'm glad I pirated that Tetris collection on my Switch, the Apple II version they have on there is a game that came out in 1989 and yet they are emulating the fucking II+ version when everyone would have been playing the 16 color IIe version by then, and that's just on top of how all the versions of Tetris present feel as barrel scraping tier as Piko Interactive's shitty rereleases because apparently it's just too hard to negotiate for the rights to have better versions like Tengen's or any of Sega's arcade ports over absolute garbage like the initial Famicom version no one likes.

This is all nonsense, theres one "bad" skill thats still fine to take its just generally agreed that maintnence is better than repair. And you really cant make any mistakes, all you have to do is level a weapon skill to do more damage and theyre all viable picks. Hell you can use just the wrench and level strength instead.

Never understood where that came from. It’s not like you need to exactly follow the one viable build or else.

People complain about the mandatory hacking skill check which is not only a result of a bug since fixed by the fan patch, there are multiple ways of getting around the barrier and if you made it that far without the 3 points in hacking you’re either very dumb or very stubborn. You’re supposed to adapt to the situation not expect the game to expect whatever hairbrained scheme you cooked up and allow for it.
