Unpopular Opinions about Video Games

what?
people rip on DS2, i haven't seen anyone talking shit about DS3 in a long time.
ds3 is all the same problems as 2 and then some. Its too linear, it has no original levels, it steals setpieces blatantly from the other games and does them poorly, it has almost no build variety because casters have been severely nerfed and str/dex quality scales too well.

The Yorhm fight is a pale immitation of storm king, The storm king fight has an enemy out of reach and a linear path that leads you to the weapon you're supposed to use. Yhorm on the other hand is an enemy you're perfectly capable of fighting on your own they just gave him too much hp. But because I saw an item in the arena and had played DeS I knew what they wanted of me.

Old monk is a similar flub, the old monk player couldnt heal but was given buffs this made for an asymetric duel. The old monk clone in 3 is an indaver+a boss, its not a fair fight at all in 1v1.

This video sums up ds3 as a whole pretty well.

A lot of the people glazing DS3 never played the older titles. It's the same as how a lot of the glazing ER receives is from people who didn't even play DS3. Most of the lame aspects aren't apparent unless you're familiar with the older titles. General rule of thumb is the one you played first is the one you like the most.

ER's large world is obviously just padding especially when souls has always been "open world" but I do think its a step back in the right direction when it comes to level design the jump button adds a lot to verticality. It has some of the best isolated level design in the series. I like that it has a hard area accessible from the start again something they havent done since the catacombs in dks1. The multiple progression routes calls back to one of 2's half implemented ideas but done much better. And I love the progression of the Halig tree and how it just keeps going down. Its also the first time warping between bonfires at the start actually makes sense.

That said when it comes to bosses ER really just keeps doubling down on making "hard" traditional fights about learning attack patterns and thats honestly a really boring set of repetitive fights in a very restrictive simple combat system. I think theres only 2 gimmicm fights in all of ER. Relanna (with her very short first phase) and the big snake (which is just another failed copy of storm king)

The point I'm trying to make is that for example your point about the Storm King and Yhorm being the same fight with the latter done worse isn't an observation or critique someone unfamiliar with DeS would make. Ditto for the world design and almost anything else. Instead, they'd be drawn in by the wow factor and lack of some of the older titles' rough edges which is I think what we see outside of the critique leveled by people deeply familiar with the series.
For the record, I'm an ER defender and I think it did almost everything 3 tried to do mechanically but better. There are some outliers like the Demon Prince fight being a better double boss than anything in ER but I found it to be better overall. The ER being overrated thing is a similarly common talking point within spheres in the know and outside that it's either people who suck it off or got filtered so hard that seething about it has become a personality trait.

I like how ER has a lot more music than DS series and that it doesn't play just during boss fights. There's plenty of really good, weird ambient in it. I've never been a fan of those dramatic orchestral pieces with loud choirs. Not saying they're bad, just not my cup of tea. They always felt distracting when I was doing my best to learn the bosses.

Catacombs

I do not like this thing, and I will never understand why it's so frequently recommended as (one of) the best PC gamepads. Just out of the box, its directional pad is a squishy, imprecise mess that renders it useless for games that require complex digital inputs like 2D fighters, and its analog sticks are simply not very durable. It has some things going for it, like its ergonomics and the fact that it's not coated with that stuff that degrades into fucking GLUE over time, but it's still a piece of crap.
Did you just wake up from a coma you succumbed to in 2012? I haven’t seen this thing put forth as a controller recommendation (beyond the titan memes) in eons.
This. There was a time when PC controllers were universally terrible, so something cheap and servicable was the best option.

These days the go-to is an Xbox controller, or better yet a third party one. I have an 8bitDo Black Myth Wukong, and that is just a branded version of their Ultimate 2C controller. It's cheap, comfortable, and fantastic quality. The d-pad is not the best, but it's usable. The branding I don't care about and only got it because it was in stock.

Though on the topic of outdated recommendations. My thread tax is going to be nVidia graphics cards.

Once upon a time, you pretty much had to go nvidia if you could afford the slight price bump because the drivers were better and some new games wouldn't work right on AMD. These days that's no longer the case, and other than maybe DLSS, I struggle to think why you'd pay the now significant price bump over AMD. Yet I still see people insisting on nVidia these days.

And again, VR. It's strange to see the different worlds of VR enthusiasts vs mainstream gamers, as the latter's opinion of VR is stuck around 2014. I still see people recommend the Valve Index (which is outdated) or the HP Reverb G2 (which has been discontinued). Within VR circles, it's all about the Quest 3 and PSVR2.

Saying "Aside from DLSS, RTX, and FG" in 2025" is like saying "aside from anisotropic filtering, mip-mapping, and anti-aliasing" in 1999." AMD closed the gap a lot with the 9000 series, but NVIDIA is still comfortably ahead of them in image quality and software support. And the 9000 series isn't cheap, either, not compared to NVIDIA.

Is it cheap?
It is cheap.
Is it good?
It is cheap.

The difference is RTX and frame gen (I assume that's what FG is?) are almost universally disliked. And last I checked (which admittedly was a while ago) FSR was starting to catch up. I had no idea about AMD prices going up.

Not even a little bit true. NVIDIA's telemetry shows otherwise.

Goes even higher with the 50 series:

YouTubers who professionally bitch about things for clicks aren't representative of the millions of people who buy products. Vex is especially pissed off about it. He'll have to just get over it, I guess.

Also, I don't know if it's just me, but the triggers feel stiff to use, making them annoying to use in racing games, and the spring on one broke on me. The triggers on PS and Xbox controllers feel much better in comparison, I think.
