Undertale / Deltarune / Toby Fox Discussion

It didn’t even really reveal that much. “You know Friend? The cat thing that’s been forshadowed since like Chapter 2? Yeah they might be relevant going forward.”
It nearly confirmed it's a species and not some singular manipulator like a bunch of fans were meming it to be, so that's something. Might matter for keeping people's expectations in check.

One can easily interpret Kris using they/them pronouns as a way to show Kris's total lack of a stable identity. He's the only human in a town full of monsters, and is an antisocial weirdo to boot. Basically all his positive interactions with anyone were just riding off his popular brother's coattails and now that Asriel's gone, he has no more friends, at least until the SOUL takes over.

He's not a monster, but he has no idea how to be 'human' either. He has a quasi-antagonistic relationship with the SOUL that controls him most of the time, and he seems fine with it as long as the SOUL takes him on fun adventures and makes him look like a cool hero in the dark worlds.
Ralsei and Flowey both refer to the SOUL as "the culmination of your being". I'm sure having the culmination of someone else's being be the thing keeping you alive would also fuck with your sense of identity. And also make you literally two niggas.

This is assuming that Kris's current SOUL isn't his original somehow, which seems likely.
The only plot relevance it would have is in the case that Kris is the Girl, as unlikely as that is.
There's more textual evidence pointing to Kris being a girl than to Kris being "non-binary".

This is the most vantablack coal shit I think I've ever played in my life. I don't think a game has ever made me feel physically ill before.

Honestly I see that Toby is not entirely the one at fault here for having Deltarune, his dream project, being "TRANSGENDER HIJACK LOL" by his dev team, but he definitely is a coward and very easily swayed by them to get away with the shit they did, like triple downing Kris' non-binaryness, the flanderizarion of characters, lack of concrete lore in favor of whimsy and joy, the deflowering metaphor being erased due to rape allegories on a teenage deer girl (big no no...unless they are male then its perfectly reasonable I guess) and all of chapter 5.

so he's not all at fault, just 99% at fault.

Dreamt that Toby released a playable preview of Chapter 6, labelled as an "intermission" and consisting of a self-contained side story at the beginning of the chapter, almost entirely focused in the light world. The first half involved entering Kris' parents' room (which is normally locked), although the point in the story when it took place wasn't really clear because both Asgore and Asriel were present. The second half was a segment split between the church and inside the apartments at the east of town, both with miniature darkness "bubbles" that allowed Darkners to manifest in the light world and involved Susie, Ralsei, and Flowery. The apartments were kinda like a hotel in that they had a communal cafeteria, where Carol was present and almost violently insistent that we sit down and eat our pancakes because we kept trying to sneak towards the soda fountain. It was implied to the player (but not that Kris and co. knew) that the pancakes were laced with something.

Notable in that we got a light world battle segment (it wasn't really clear against who), which was still Deltarune-styled but had the Undertale color scheme to the UI. Also, Kris had actual dialogue during a moment where the soul wasn't around, which took place in a fully-animated and voiced cutscene at that. Also Kris was definitively referred to as "he" multiple times and it was confirmed all the "they" stuff was specifically referring to when the soul is inhabiting him. Sadly I woke up before I really take in the online reactions around that little revelation. I know at the very least some of the wiki editors were pissy at having to rectify his pronoun field and remove all those "they" citations.
