Unless chapter 6 somehow fixes the pacing issues the story has had so far it will be bad. I honestly wonder if the weird route is the true/good ending in some roundabout way. The weird route is what was most interesting to me about deltarune and why I even played the game at all. The main route was fine, but 5 was really annoying since I don't care for gay niggers who don't matter to the overall plot. The "pay 2 FSD to watch gay niggas talk" may be one of the most underbaked and pointless systems in a chapter. I did them all thinking that we could maybe call back to elements of the interactions, similar to the trial stuff from the blue fight, but no they are just there to talk about LGBTIAQIP+ issues.
I think in my shortsightedness I forgot that:
A. it came out in June
B. it came out on yuri day

Good morning my therapy group.

No spoilers because this game spoiled itself.
OK. I'm writing a bigger post as we speak but this should succinctly describe my experience:
DeltaruneChapter5_v3.webm
Goats at half-mast, everyone. This game stinks!
In that - SINGLE - moment, the jig was up. I knew that it was going to be Steven Universe.

I actually wasn't even that excited for Chapter 5. I was doing other stuff and probably would've postponed playing it if I didn't want to avoid spoilers and get stuck into the discussion.
The game does not start off well. The absolute mountain of (technically optional but why are you playing otherwise?) quirky dialogue scenes dumped on you at once was boring me to tears. I actually stopped playing after an hour to do some work that I was putting off. Thanks, Toby.
Keep in mind that I hadn't even left Castle Town yet.

I'll actually lay off the epic lesbian moments because:
A: Everyone's banged that drum long and hard by now. Nothing we don't already know comes up.
B: Toby's outclassed himself again and managed to make something even worse. I was genuinely shocked when I saw it ...even though I had it anticipated.
All I can say is that Toby seems to intentionally lean into the criticisms he's faced.
Also, lol that Toby includes an intentionally "sexy" character and then makes him the blandest HUMAN on earth. I know it's what Gigi likes but it feels like a very coy middle finger to his - typically freaky - audience.

Like any good abusive lover, Toby immediately tries to get me to forget my issues by pretending to be Super Paper Mario.
Now, I love that game. I love it like it's my older sibling. I have Blumiere backstory fanfiction stored to the PC I'm writing this on.
...but it's not enough.
I mean, I really enjoyed the platforming segments. I thought the controls were good and that the environmental interactions were really really clever. I want to play a whole game like this.
...but we're never getting any of it again. The classic indie game issue of including a million different cool ideas and then dumping them without missing a beat.

Here's an excerpt from my playthrough Notepad++ - when Asgore first appeared:

I was actually incorrect. There was NEGATIVE payoff.
Asgore usually gets it dirty but what happened to him was obscene.
Sidenote: I appreciate Toby retconning the Toriel slander but Angel forbid we have any interesting or unpleasant character developments.

I did not appreciate the cheap trick of introducing a bunch of cutesy characters only to immediately kill them off at the end
...although, I think I could go the rest of my life without another quirk chungus scene filled with babytalk.
The single good part of this chapter was when the cowboy guy repeatedly tried to kill himself.
Something about it felt very "human" in a way that everything else didn't.
Then they have to have the "Don't do this at home, kids!" scene at the end to kill the mood.

That trick at the end of the game was dirty but I caught it just as he was pulling his fist out.
As soon as Susie said "We need to tell someone. This can't just be between us anymore.", I knew what was happening.
As-if Toby would ship his characters in contradicting ways ...and yet he seemingly plays with it.

Possibly the most damning thing about this chapter is how unremarkable the soundtrack is.
It lazily fades into the background and all sounds the same.
How the fuck did Toby let this shit slide? He obviously knows about Goemon - why is every non-recycled/remixed track the same twangy boring nonsense?

Mad Mew Mew's track and fight were OK but I am not into Vocaloid pop stuff and all the fun creepiness of the battle was probably only half-intentional.
Speaking of fights, they're all starting to degrade into the same boring shit with zero thought needed. The fight minigames and "puzzles" this chapter were really fucking dire.

If Toby doesn't include at least 5 (Solo!) Toriel bromides in the next chapter, I'm shoving the game disk up his ass with the Wii dildo controller.
The "pay 2 FSD to watch gay niggas talk" may be one of the most underbaked and pointless systems in a chapter.
The DELTARUNE tea parties were formerly the worst part of the game and Chapter 5 has an entire fucking menu dedicated to them. I think that sums it all up.

Having slept on it, I don't think my opinion of the chapter has changed much. It's still a nothingburger of an update that doesn't even really nail the "last fun thing" aspect that Toby was going for. Maybe that will change when chapter 6 drops and it opens with the Knight stabbing Noelle and/or Susie through the chest, but for now it's easily the worst part of the game.

> The main plot barely moving forward despite the game being 70% over
> Suselle not just being confirmed, but it's mandatory and heavily prominent, superceding previous interactions between Kris and Susie
> The empty promise of Papyrus and Asriel still being jingled in front of the players' faces almost a decade later
> Weird route gets approximately 10 minutes of content
> Writing getting palpably more self-referential, quippy and fanservicey than before
> Chapter dedicated to "one more zany adventure before things get serious" despite Chapter 3 already fulfilling that role
> No Asgore fight
> Not even a Touhou-inspired battle to justify the random Japanese setting
> Antepenultimate chapter spent developing a whole new ensemble of characters instead of giving depth to the existing ones
> One of them is literally just a burly gay black man in a dress
> Tralsei might be real

Thank you, mister Robert Fox. This is exactly what I was looking forward to in Deltarune Chapter 5.

I was having flashbacks to Chapter 2 while reviewing the soundtrack and having good memories of when things fucking mattered.

At least Chapter 2 had the addition of Burghley and other fun characters, Noelle being fourth-wheeled in the party felt more natural because she doesn't know about this Dark World shit and thinks its a dream. They felt like they knew about Castle Town a bit with Queen and some of the others there, and them being on the internet allowed them to interact with and hint at worlds unseen.
Now it's just fanservice, the chapter. Can't wait for Toby to pull the rug from under us for Chapter 6.

The funny thing is, you look at the gameplay and its actually decent.
Swappimg from turn based to a soft 2d platforming, interesting patterns (haven't fought the final/extra bossess) And great maps and enviroment.
The castletown segment too adds a fun optional boss and other neat little things.
Music has some very decent sections too.
And then it all goes to the shitter.

You can skip text, you can take the ferris wheel with Susie, eat ice cream with her and even do the hammer game.
The empty promise of Papyrus and Asriel still being jingled in front of the players' faces almost a decade later
Sans never worked without Papyrus, this is a punishment to all the tumblr faggots making AU sans, done without a care everyone else would be hit by stray shots.
Writing getting palpably more self-referential, quippy and fanservicey than before
Not even a Touhou-inspired battle to justify the random Japanese setting
Haven't reached the ending yet, but unless we got to find a password for the bunker, setting the chapter in the flower show was straight up a mistake, just like bringing back so much fucking shit from chapter 1.
The closest thing we got was Ran Yakumo's hat and the new battle theme being a worse version of stage 4 theme from DDC.
I miss joy mutants.

The only silver lining I can think of is that the chapter is getting near universally panned. The general consensus is that it was a huge disappointment, the nicest thing anyone can think to say about it is "Yeah the story sucks but at least the gameplay was cool," and hell must have frozen over because I've seen multiple normie fans come out and complain about how forced and sloppy Suselle felt. The carefully-constructed mythos of Toby Fox being this indelible irreplaceable auteur who has had everything meticulously planned out for years has been shattered.

Well, the copium I'm going with today is that since it is an episodic release, he can technically go back and rewrite parts of it. it'll never happen, but it's a thought I had.
