Apparently some images got leaked on chapter 5. Dunno if its true, but they look real. There's nothing thats too spoilery but still putting them under spoilers

Update: poster is saying they're fake, see below post from me.
fake and gay. doesn't fit into the aesthetics given in the trailer and what is THAT character in the 3rd picture?
Is it even much of a "theory"? It's just a theme that seems to be foreshadowing something ominous
roots theory is about roots being hometown dark world which is a huge no no. and it's author thinks that friend is the secret boss of chapter 5, which i deem not likely

Alright, found the pictures. The poster is saying they're fake, but how do you make fake pictures that fast, especially with the borders that have pink and gold cherry blossoms which just got revealed? The poster may be trying to do damage control.
The images are actually from January/February 2026 (or even December 2025).

But that even further begs the question -- I haven't really seen anyone say that Chapter 5 was going to have a Japanese theme. If these 3 images are fake, how did they predict it so perfectly?

The actual source is 4chan, here's an earlier post: https://x.com/deltarunetimer/status/2019778528007360721
I recall that there was a specific flub in these with a particle effect in the background of two images.
In both images, the particles were all in identical positions - something extremely unlikely to happen if they were taken at different times.

Doesn't look very Japanese to me!

Do you think the road blockade that's in the western part of the hometown is going to be removed, and all the festival booths/stalls will be placed there, or perhaps they will be placed on the streets that are already walkable in previous chapters?
Or, instead of whatever I have in mind when it comes to festivals, we are going to see something else like parades and floats?

Bold of you to assume Sans would do more than the bare minimum to follow the mandated theme (the nice cream cart has Japanese letters drawn in marker behind the sprite, trust him).

I think it’s just an in-universe explanation for why you can’t leave town, so it’ll be there for the whole game.

If the festival does end up being Japanese themed it's to be expected but I'd be pretty disappointed. I feel like the Japanese festival thing has been done so many times.

Practically any kind of festival would work better than a Japanese festival. The game is clearly supposed to take place somewhere in the U.S., it's a caricature of a small town in the middle of bumfuck nowhere in the U.S. It could be an Irish or German festival, since the U.S. has a lot of heritage from these areas, and most of the monsters are heavily inspired by European folklore. If it was an Irish style festival that would also be a nice callback to a lot of the speculation that Mt.Ebott in Undertale was supposed to take place in Ireland.

In all seriousness, I don’t think the festival itself will be Japanese, just the dark world. There’s been nothing to indicate what kind of theme it’ll have beyond carnival/fair.

Does Toby Fox know he isn’t Japanese?
He jorked it to too much Yuri and his skin has slowly been turning yellow and his eyes have been getting squintier ever since. Soon he will be entirely Japanese and committing war crimes in the name of the emperor.

Asgore killing the children in Undertale was actually a reference to Toby's desire to join Unit 731 and murder Korean and Chinese children.

You know they are really taking it seriously when there's no 3D Toriel or Ralsei to be found anywhere in the trailer.
